I think this is plausible. The games are in no way competitive and everyone understands this, but has no problem with it. Is not one of the NCAA directives to promote fair competition.

From ncaa.org

Core Purpose:
Our purpose is to govern competition in a fair, safe, equitable and sportsmanlike manner, and to integrate intercollegiate athletics into higher education so that the educational experience of the student-athlete is paramount. -

Forgetting the laughably absurd last part of the "Core Purpose", how can the games that went on yesterday throughout much of the SEC be considered fair.

I dont believe that. I just think it brings those programs up a little. they can still survive...

its like saying the fast food workers can not survive without $15/hour.

when small schools have the majority of their athletic budgets depending on the money games, yes, they are dependent on them

Why, especially, need they survive?

I understand it helps them but they can survive without them. They just have to cut back.

If San Jose State did not play Auburn yesterday, they wont close the doors down.

It hurts football when a lot of teams are playing fcs opponents, or if teams are consistently playing fcs or weak fbs opponents. In general i don't think it's bad for cfb the fcs schools need these games to fund their athletic programs and its an opportunity for young teams to work through problems and gain experience.

And the fair competitions in the core values is probably more on the cheating side not opponent quality.

Then they're a poorly run athletic department and can't operate within a budget if that's the case.

Gives smaller schools money, and a chance for name recognition. These games can also allow players to make their Heisman case.

That may be, but it is more than just following arbitrary rules.

No, they don't. Many Div 2 schools probably receive the lion's share of the money for their athletic budget from those games. That means those schools can continue to have a program in football and other sports. That means more students get to play at the collegiate level, which is only a good thing for the sport as a whole and the other sports that CFB supports.

From a fan view, we don't like it because we want to see LSU/Oregon, Bama/USC, etc. every week. It will never happen. Also, one of the greatest aspects of college football is an Appalachian State rolling into the big house and pulling the upset. Those really big cinderella stories virtually become extinct. We don't have an NCAA tourney where a Mercer can knock off a Duke. We essentially have the first 4 weeks of the season and that's it. After that, it's mostly good teams playing each other.

Yes and no. Yes if big schools play nothing but little schools because it makes the ooc schedule worthless. No because big time programs need tune up games if they are going to play an SEC, ACC, PAC-12, etc schedule. Also the smaller schools need the $$$, but they could survive without, they would just be D2 and not FCS.

"Smaller schools" jack the big schools every year. Ask ranked Nebraska if McNeese St belonged on the field with them....

Those schools need those games to keep their programs, or they wouldn't do it, but I agree it's bad football to watch.

But hell who would have thought North Dakota State and Appalachian State would beat Kansas State and Michigan respectively? Even though they were top tier FCS schools.

I agree. And you could tell watching their faces as they entered SHSU enjoyed every minute of playing in Death Valley. That's an experience they will never forget.

I, as a fan, enjoyed watching the young guys develop and gain confidence against an overmatched foe. I watched it from beginning to end, seeing which freshmen will contribute, what we need to improve on, etc.

And you have to remember we don't get exhibition games. A prime time game against a Power 5 team every week leaves little opportunity to create depth.

That said, there should be balance. At least one Power 5 OOC and a 9 game SEC schedule would be ideal.

ETA: Also, these games have always been apart of college football. It may be a hindrance to TV ratings and capacity crowds, but it isn't "hurting" college football, which is more popular than ever. Getting rid of them may improve it or it may not, but with up tempo, more sophisticated offenses it gives these teams more of a chance than ever to pull off the upset. We see it almost every week.

I find these games, no matter which SEC team is playing the flavor of the week, very sad games to watch and usually I find something else to do as I fail to see how this is competitive.

I have been against these types of games from the start. I am for a shorter schedule, real teams only, SEC OOC, whatever, and more teams in the playoffs, longer playoff period.

How we go about it can be like a rising tide which floats all boats, large and small.
