A UNIVERSITY lecturer claims to have solved one of the greatest murder mysteries of all time – the identity of Jack the Ripper.

Forensics expert Dr Jari Louhelainen, a senior lecturer in molecular biology at Liverpool John Moores, was able to extract 126-year-old DNA from a shawl found by the body of Catherine Eddowes, one of the Ripper’s victims.

The shawl, bought at auction by Birkenhead-born businessman Russell Edwards in 2007, was found to contain DNA from her blood as well as DNA from the killer.

Using cutting-edge techniques, Dr Louhelainen was able to prove a 100% match that the DNA belonged to Polish migrant Aaron Kosminski.

The photo from Mary Kelly's murder scene is pretty horrific.

Well shite. I always liked the crazy theory purported in Alan Moore's "From Hell" in which a psychopathic and deranged British doctor was hired by the British Royal family to kill off the mother and illegitimate child of one of the Prince's affairs with a hooker. The doctor then proceeded to take up the murder as a mission on the behalf of the freemasons and began committing ritualistic killings of women all around London. frick it, until you tell me this guys had some connection to the freemasons I'm not buying it.

There have been lots of theories, including that it was one of the British princes - Prince of Wales that died young, I believe. Another was that it was a doctor who emigrated to New York.

Whoever it was had some medical knowledge or skills, and was vicious, probably sociopathic.

Sounds like an interesting book. I would think it would be difficult to "prove" that DNA was from the killer though. The victims were primarily prostitutes, so there was likely a LOT of DNA around them and their clothes.

So is this victim blood or killer blood? I doubt there was a lot of blood from the "johns" on there.

It was from semen. I had read elsewhere though that they believed the shawl may have been something the killer brought to the scene himself since she was so poor she sold her shoes the day before, the shawl had ties to his Polish heritage, and so on. The most interesting part was that it's possible the shawl's religious connotation was a clue to the next date he would strike. I also understood it to be the only semen sample on the shawl.

The blood splatter was the victim's.

Here's a more detailed account

But to be one of the suspects, deranged and have been with one of the victims? They'd be convicted now.
