Started in 1936, 78 have been awarded up to this point. Prior to the mid 1960's it was awarded before the bowl games.
Only 27 schools have won all those 78 titles.
Alabama, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Miami, USC, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Ohio State (8 schools) have won 46 of the titles (~60% of all awarded).
The last team to win their first ever title was Florida back in 1996.
7 SEC teams have at least 1 title.
7 current Big 10 schools have also won at least 1 title (thanks to their recent addition of Nebraska and Maryland).
5 current ACC.
3 current B12.
2 current PAC12. That's right, besides USC, only Colorado has ever won an AP national title, it came of course before they were in the Pac12 and was their infamous 1990 "5th down" season, with Georgia Tech winning the Coaches' poll.

Virginia Tech and Oregon have come the closest in recent history to winning their first ever title, losing in the title game following the 1999 and 2010 seasons.

Alabama only wins the AP NC around 12% of the time. Need to up that percentage.

I was hoping to add the Gamecocks this year to the Birds of Fail list. O well

This is absolutely an off season thread. Interesting between Feb. thru Aug.... not so much now.

Which super exciting match up from tomorrow should we discuss instead?
When the flagship game for the conference is Ole Miss vs. Vandy, I think I'd consider this an off season week.

All this historical talk got me to thinking about the Aggies' 1939 National Championship team, and I took a look at the final poll results. Interesting point about long-term SEC Dominance, if you look back to 1939.
1. Texas A&M (current SEC member)
2. Tennessee (then & current SEC member)
3. USC (west)
4. Cornell (ok some things do change)
5. Tulane (then an SEC member)
6. Missouri (current SEC member)
1939. Four of the top six teams in the country were then (or are now) members of the SEC.

Then go click on another thread to read and comment in.
Who gives a shite if you think it's an offseason thread?
Who cares if only one person reads the whole thing and nobody comments on it? It'll die off on its own and be out of the way in no time.
I think it's a pretty damn high quality thread compared to the garbage that has been posted here over the last few days.

The Southeast has always been a powerhouse.
The biggest change over the decades has been the Northeastern schools fading to obscurity.

Dude, have you looked at the SEC schedule for this weekend? This weekend basically IS "off-season."
