This website compares preferences for universities amongst students who were admitted to both. Of course, there is some margin for error because the data is only a sampling.
Regardless, here are some interesting SEC results:

50% Alabama - 50% Auburn
75% Florida - 25% Georgia
72% Georgia - 28% Auburn
60% Arkansas - 40% LSU
50% Tennessee - 50% Kentucky
62% Tennessee - 38% Alabama
50% Missouri - 50% Arkansas
67% Texas A&M - 33% LSU
64% Georgia - 36% South Carolina
50% Ole Miss - 50% Mississippi State

Major out of conference battles:
68% Texas - 32% Texas A&M
77% Missouri - 23% Kansas
61% Clemson - 39% South Carolina
77% Georgia Tech - 23% Georgia
85% Florida - 15% Florida State
55% Kentucky - 45% Louisville

Can't blame them. Even if I were objective, I'd choose Fayetteville over BR any day

Difference in in-state and out-of-state tuition probably makes a big difference.

There are a lot of factors to explain why the data is the way it is, still interesting to me though.

I imagine the majority of people applying to both UGA and AU would prefer to go to UGA, regardless of tuition.

Sadly, that will be my kid. She desperately wants to go to Auburn, but GA is way, way, way cheaper in state, especially with Hope.

I think the word "Preference" is a little misleading. Interesting statistics, but there is obviously an enormous amount of factors weighing on the decision of school x and y.

Same. Came down to AU and UA for me and UAs campus blew me away. Made the decision much easier.

They should only compare in-state schools with each other.

More because kids who are applying to Auburn and Georgia are applying from Georgia. Georgia is harder to get into, and kids from Alabama don't apply to Georgia often.

It's not shocking. While there is a solid contingent of GA kids who make AU their first choice (right here), it's like LSU-TAMU, for in state GA kids which is most of those assessed, UGA is their first choice.

Perhaps, but I would argue many of those factors combine to create a preference.

We're not talking about fanhood, but from an academic standpoint I think cost, location, etc. are all part of preference.

Agreed. You get accepted to 2 schools, but choose 1 over the other. I was mislead because I thought this was for students who attended both schools and then picked their preference.

It's just a tool - you can compare any two schools you wish. I just put that list together.

I was the opposite. I felt UA's campus was very meh. And their engineering schools sucks.
