I see lots of threads and arguments regarding a qb battle that is still apparently on going which is fine and healthy both in competition and for us as fans to debate in good taste. I don't like to see the racism card being thrown around in the discussion because I really don't believe that is a fair response when everyone just wants to see their team be successful. That said, had the defense come out and gave us a glimpse of that 2011 defense that was on the field, would there be a qb debate going on? If Sims averaged what he did on Saturday for the season with that good of a defense I don't think this would be an issue. My personal opinion is that i think most of us expected a better defensive performance (I recognize they only gave up a TD), and when we didn't see that the natural tendency is to look to the qb to see if he can be the difference maker for the team. Just thought for discussion if anyone is interested.

Yes. Saban himself flat out said the QB competition isn't over. If the had held WVU to any less than the 16 points they gave up it would not have mattered.

I understand there would still be competition I just don't think there would be such vitriol con the fans over the issue if we could rely on this defense to stop anyone on the schedule. The numbers Sims put up would be good enough to beat anyone with a great defense.

I think Blake played very good, not great, missed a couple easy throws that could have kept the drive going, but pretty proud of of his first start, only made one mistake, which could have cost us. He also had the benefit of a stellar receiving core, and running backs, which made it easier.

The D didn't play great, but were good enough, and a few mistakes by WV helped.

Coker was warming up during the second to last drive before halftime, and Blake threw and 10 yard pass to White on 3 and 13, White made about 5 defenders miss and got big yards to the redzone, and TJ did the rest. May have saved Blake's job right there, not that Coker would have done any better.

edit: Did Blake even take a sack? Looks like he avoided a couple, and gained some positive yards on some breakdowns.

You don't want your QB to be good enough to beat anyone as long as you play great D. You won't your QB to be good enough to beat anyone no matter how the D plays.

Sims hasn't quite shown that yet, but neither has Coker.

I agree the other thread though seems have to devolved into a race argument. I think going into this season I expected perhaps unfairly to see a defense closer to that 2011 defense and when I didn't perhaps panic sets in. Blake did fine batting a couple of decisions and am strength is a concern. I still would like to see Coker as should every fan just to see if he can live up to some of the hype the media unfairly put him under.

I don't think it was right to see this D as 2011. Next year's D though? Experience and talent galore.

I was impressed with his pose in the pocket, though he hurried a couple throws, side stepped a corner blitz and made a nice completion to Amari for a first, also had a good run that helped set up the field goal before the half.

Coker will get his opportunities in the next couple of weeks. But, if Sims continues to play like he did Saturday with some progression, I don't see Coker taking over unless Jacob comes out in the next two games and puts up ridiculous numbers. We will see over the next few weeks, but regardless of what Saban says, the starting QB position is Sims' to lose imo.

And it should be. He is a senior and had put in his time. Some have seen the body of work though and penciled in a new starter based on past experience.

Well that's what a QB battle is about. Haven't read the other thread, but who plays has nothing to do with race, that is ridiculous.

Well, anyways, I'm happy for Blake. He has put in his time, and glad he had a good game, and even with a few mistakes, he played well. Hopefully this first start and win gives him some confidence going forward.

The defense wasn't that bad Sylve just gave up a lot of yards.

He got his arse kicked by Kevin White. In his defense, Kevin White looks like a potential NFL caliber receiver. But yeah, Sylve is not very good.

Your kidding yourself if you don't think the kid is good. I saw Dre get his arse kicked too. Milliner too. All in their first year starting. Cyrus looked like shite too his first year. Kid was in position he just couldn't find the ball.
