Why doesn't Jeremy Johnson run the ball?

Jeremy Johnson is a big athletic guy. His build reminds some of Cam Newton and for good reason. He appears to be fairly mobile when he wants to run.

So why is it that Jeremy Johnson never runs the ball? I don't even mean consistently, I mean enough to make the read option an 'option' and not just a handoff. With his passing ability coupled with someone his size & athleticism runnin the ball, he would be extremely dangerous to match up against

Gus said they had scripted plays for JJ. maybe they didn't want him to give him too many options and possibly make a mistake? Or maybe they just wanted to see how his arm is in an actual SEC game?

FWIW, I remember him looking a little slow running in the games he played last year

My first response was-well....he doesn't have to...He throws the ball so beautifully well. BUT-

that was the one thing Saturday that was really highlighted for me-just how awesome it is to have the threat of our QB tucking and running to freeze defenses for a split second and open up opportunities for all of the other facets of the offense. Hopefully he'll develop that aspect a little better before he takes full reign next year.

He is more of an inside power runner than the outside speedster nm is. Gus says he can run the read option well, but Arkansas opened up in a D where passing was the better option and when the passing game was going so well they just stuck with it.

Not sure if the is just coach speak or not.

And that's probably worth mentioning, Cam probably "looks slow" compared to NM.

Maybe they didn't want Johnson to get dinged up in the first half knowing that Marshall was out. I still don't expect Johnson to be one of the top rushers once he becomes the starter in '15. We might see him keep it 8-10 times just to keep the D from crashing the backside.

Gus is the only one that can answer your question. The one thing I know from watching him for 4 years at Carver is even though he can run and has made some big run plays the kid is a pocket QB at heart and feels much more comfortable there than he does in designed run plays.

I like a lot f the answers in here, but someone else here brought up in the game thread that maybe they wanted to hold off on the read option until Nick came in as a strategy.

I tend to agree with that because I remember hearing a practice report that JJ was doing pretty well on the option read and he can run pretty good, not NM good, but competent.

He answered this on Tiger Talk. Basically said why run him when there wasn't a need. The passing game was wide open so they took it

Because he's 6'4", 230#, with a rocket for an arm, and touch like Tom Brady.

Missing the point though. Johnson didn't have a single run on the read option. It is a read option not a handoff. I directly attribute two failed 3rd and shorts with CAP to Arkansas stacking the box and playing the handoff the whole way

Even Chris Todd kept the D offense and got 4 yards and a QB Power slide. Jeremy Johnson should be able to get 5 + slide or truck a CB who is half his size

Yep, one of those was an obvious keep for the QB. For all we know, Gus just told him to hand it off every time. Though, the TD pass to Ray was sort of a read option keeper. If the DB had gone with Ray, he more than likely would have tucked it.

I feel like this is probably the answer. He came out and was passing at will, and Gus knew Marshall was starting the second half, so why risk injury to your backup when you know the next guy coming in is going to run it a lot and expose himself to more hits?

Johnson definitely had the ability to run, just watch his HS highlights. I remember an interview with him at the Hoover 7 on 7 going into his sophomore year where he said he just prefers to sit back in the pocket and sling the ball and be an actual QB, and runs when he needs to make a play. He just likes to throw the ball, and he's fricking good at it so who cares?

Except that Marshall wasn't "out". Gus said after the game that Marshall's punishment was not STARTING and they were fully prepared to put him in the game at any time, they just kept on going with the hot hand (Johnson) because there was no reason not to.

Bingo.

Gus doesn't run a shite-ton of plays if he doesn't have to. If something works, he'll stick with it until they stop it. Everybody ought to know that by now.

By your logic why the hell didn't they bring in Marshall after one of the failed 3rd and shorts. Clearly Marshall was out for the first half. Therefore no running from Johnson. We didn't want Wallace running the show until the 2nd half.

He does look like a pocket guy. I think he can get some yards with his legs when things break down. He's not a NM with his legs, but who is? (and no, Cam wasn't even as good with his legs as Nick is)
