Everyone is rightfully excited about all the runnin backs but I've seen some shite talk about Mason on the internets this morning and afternoon.
Here's how well these quarterbacks did against the vaunted Venebles defense of the Clemson Tigers last year.
Connor Shaw 53%
Jameis Winston 64.7%
Braxton Miller 66.6%
Aaron Murray 68.9%
Last night:
Hutson Mason 69.2%
That is all.

Interesting stat. I think he will be fine. We need to throw a long one or two to make the defense respect him. He'll be ok.

To be fair, about half of those were WR screens and the other half were under 10 yard throws.

One good wheel route to JSW and the defenses will start playing everything honest.

We need a thread from you about the defense please.

5 completions to Bennett with 12 yd average.
A 12 yarder to conley.
A 11 yarder to Michel.
9 yarder to Jeb.
You know it's pretty easy to look stuff up these days instead of making shite up and repeating stuff that you made up in your own mind.
What is the purpose of your self-deprecation? Do you think others will think you are a cool person if you say bad things about your own team? Ha Ha I'm Floyd and people like me cuz I'm not like those other fans, I say bad things about my team (even if they aren't true).

Everything has been stated.
First half looked like more of the same, not enough QB pressure, bad tackling, young morons making mistakes in the secondary.
Pruitt got them dialed in for the second half, credit to substitution and better conditioning imo, clemson just seemed to get worn out on both sides of the ball.
Not sure how much of our success vs Clemson is a direct result of Pru Pru being a genius and/or a blood descendant of Christ.
They played a good game, I hope they keep it up.
It will only be in hindsight that we can objectively compare the two coordinators with any kind of validity.

He did fine, especially without the two main downfield threats

Yeah, over hearing people rag on Hutson was maddening. No one asked him to win us the ball game but if he completes over 65% of his passes and doesn't make mistakes and throw INT's we will be in for a good year with this D and RB core. They didn't test him at all down the field, I don't know if that was more of Mitchell and JSW being out or Bobo not trusting him just yet.
Why pass at all?
70% carries Gurley
15% Chubb
15% Sony, KM
???
Profit

I'd rather Gurley not be ridden like Lattimore was

Posters who say he needs the ability to go deep are correct. 10 yd passes don't stretch a defense. Need our speed guys back and healthy.

When evaluating running back stats, the most commonly used (positive) metric is yards per carry. When evaluating quarterback stats, yards per attempt is the equivalent metric, and it's pretty important. I could be a college qb and complete pretty close to 100%, if I had a receiver stand 2 yards away in the back field and lob him the football after every snap. It wouldn't make for an effective offense, but it'd look nice in the stat column, high completion rate with zero ints.
Comparing Hutson Mason's completion percentage against Aaron Murray's isn't useful. Murray threw downfield, and did it with great success. Defenses have to respect that. Unless Mason can do it more than he did yesterday, and with more success, our running game and offensive output will begin to suffer.

Vs Nebraska he threw a 48 yarder to Bennett and 29 yarder to Conley.
Vs Tech he threw a 33 yarder to Conley, 30 yarder to Lynch, and 21 yarder to Bennett.
His longest last night was "only" 23 to Bennett.
But to say he doesn't have the ability to stretch the field is just ignorant.
Later, maybe today maybe tomorrow, I'm going to rewatch the game with a more analytical (sober) eye and maybe there's a good reason he didn't have many long ones yesterday.

nobody said he can't stretch the field. He played a very fine game from my perspective and deserves the largely great appreciation he has received.
P.s. I believe the ability to go down field lies more with receiving corps than qb in UGA's case. Murray also had less opportunities after loss of Mitchell and jsw.

Son, the defense was stretched. Look at their DB s ...on a lot of plays. They were backed up. The slant was there most of the night . You don't " stretch" the field when you don't need to stretch it. I swear to fuvking Christ. Y'all just babble shite just to babble it... Why do you think we started attacking the edge with the run?

Those dogging Mason today are types who just can't take yes for an answer. We'll get plenty of chances to critique Mason in the future because somebody...at some point....will bottle up the running game and Mason will need to get it done in the air.
And when that happens he'll be fine....
.....nice stat too by the way.

Look at these highlights... Their cbs were in cover 3.... 8 to 10 yards back and their first step was back until the 4th when they played more man and c2. At that point. It didn't matter.
Bottom line is their lbs weren't dropping due to PA and their DBs were in a cover 3... That is why the 8-12 yard passes were there...
Class dismissed ...

No turnovers. 70% against one of the toughest defenses in the nation. With his two best WRs out.
I was worried about how he was going to handle the pressure of everything, and he was poised through the whole game.
He's going to be just fine, y'all. Just waiting on JSW and MM...

I think everyone will agree that USCe's game plan first and foremost in 2 weeks will be stopping the run and forcing Mason to show some poise in the pocket and make some throws.
I do agree that, eventually, he will settle down and be a balanced passer. I'm sure having this game under his belt will help him. Also, hopefully we will have MM and JSW for SC and make his job easier in keeping the D honest.
Get past SC and I believe we end up facing an undefeated Auburn in November for an epic showdown between the hedges.
