What is the advantage of our corners playing the man instead of the ball?

Seems to me that playing the man increases the likely hood of p.i. and gives the db no chance of making a pick. Sylve playing the man was the reason he kept getting Mossed yesterday.

Against HUNH Air Raid teams, man coverage is both easier to call/get in position for and more effective. They're trying to throw the ball into space. Playing zone gives them space to throw to. If you press the WRs you throw off the timing and extend the play. Then with the man coverage you have DBs always with the receivers, instead of in zone where it is easier to slip open.

Yeah, but that is a risk you take.

Not really. I mean, less of a chance than zone sure, but good DBs with ball skills get INTs in man.

Exactly. Syvle sucks. Get physical guys like TB and EJ out there and things would be different.

Man I wish we were in it for Tee McFadden.

Even if you're playing the man instead of the ball, you're still at some point supposed to get your head around and find the ball, right? Never saw Sylve do that.

I mean playing the man while the ball is in the air, our dbs never get their head around even when the receiver has begin to look for the ball

That is what i'm talking about. They did the same crap last year so I just figured it had to be the way they are taught to do it.

Dee, Dre, Kareem, and Javy didn't have a lot of trouble finding the ball.

Some guys just aren't instinctive enough to turn their head at the right time.

True, I remember in the ND game when Belue made the great bat down on 4th down. Dee did it well throughout his career, but for some reason it just seems they just play the man while the ball is in the air

Maybe, but I doubt it. I just think they aren't very skilled at it yet.

That last pass that was caught with Sylve "covering" was almost like a punt. It had a lot of air under it, and, the WVU receiver was falling down and still caught it. Sylve turns back to look and he should have had an easy interception or at least, no reception for WVU.

I'll be a big advocate of playing man when our superior athletes are in the game. If we are going to play with Cyrus Jones and Bradley Sylve at CB, I actually think zone is the better option. The reason being that we will give up the dink and dunk but not the big play. When teams get into the red zone, the spaces our zone allows become much smaller, and our blitz packages start to do work.

If/when Tony Brown, Marlon Humphrey, and Eddie Jackson are in the game, I think man coverage will be the way to go.

Ideally, the CB should be in perfect position, read the WR to determine that the ball is inbound, turn and make a play on the ball.

If the CB isn't in perfect position (trailing the WR for example) he's supposed to keep his eyes on the WR and attempt to take the ball out of the WRs hands as the WR attempts to make the catch. Cyrus did this yesterday to break up a TD.

Some DBs are better at playing the ball than others. Sylve doesn't appear to have a knack for it but could've been jitters. I rewatched the game today and he was even worse than I initially thought. I'd love to see him bounce back and play well but wouldn't be surprised if he's replaced.

It's partly how they are taught and partly that he isn't very good.

Abdiw- huh ?
