The Battle in the Skies: Reclining vs. Protecting Knees/Laptops etc.

"Last Sunday, a US flight had to be diverted when a fight broke out between two passengers over its use.
A man had attached a knee defender to his table to make sure he had space to work on his laptop. When a woman in front tried to recline, he refused to remove it, even when flight crew intervened.
The woman became so upset that she threw a glass of water over him, and the row prompted the pilot of the four-hour flight between Newark and Denver to make an emergency landing in Chicago."

For reference the "knee defender" is a product (pictured below) that is clipped to the seat in front of you that prevents reclining.
What do you think? Which is more important:
- The right of one passenger to be comfortable and recline
or
- The right of one passenger not to have his knees assaulted
Who's health/comfort should win this argument?
As a relatively tall 6'3" guy, sitting on a plane even without the passenger in front of me reclining can be very painful with my knees already jammed into the seat. When the passenger in front of me tries to lean back my knees howl and it hurts like hell for the entire flight so I'm on side two.

I'm never comfortable on planes (and I'm not even that tall). I'll inconvenience myself in the name of courtesy sometimes, but personally the only time I'll ever recline my own seat is if no one is in the seat behind me. I can manage to get comfortable in other ways than just reclining, so I think that the woman in this story would have been better off doing the same.
If I were the dude, though, I probably would have capitulated purely out of chivalry. Just don't think it was cool for the woman to force the issue and become irascible. She has no idea what the guy is working on, and it's not like folks can't sleep on planes without reclining the seat.

Out of common courtesy I've always asked the person behind me if they mind if I recline and that's on a 3+ hour flight. If it looks like they're already crammed in there because of height or whatever I won't even ask/bother reclining. So I'm going with the knees person.
That's an awful lot of jimmie rustling over a reclined seat though.

Nope, unless she was hot.

Me or the people on the flight?

The last flight I was on was 4 hours and the frickstick in front of me reclined his seat all the way back and promptly fell asleep. I'm 6'5", and am uncomfortable in coach (i has the poors) as it is, I don't need some a-hole crunching my knees.

As a tall guy, frick those reclining pieces of shite.
I'd have done the same thing that guy did.

I never recline unless the seat behind me is empty.

As a frequent flyer, eff the recliners. I'm not particularly petty, but I will knee the eff out of people that recline all the way.
Not like a hard sharp knee pop to hurt them but push it forwards to where they are not all the way resting down. It's annoying enough because it shifts as I do. And it sticks a lump in their back.
Kinda like when we're being forced to merge into one lane and some dude rides it all the way to the last minute and try to get over. I won't let them in to the point of getting hit. I don't like people who put their personal wants above common decency.

They should just make the fricking planes more roomy, or have seats available for tall people they are more spaced out.

I'm tall, and I recline. I also don't begrudge the person in front of me the right to recline and use all the functions of the seat he/she paid for.
I just shift my legs to get them as comfortable as I can. Life goes on.

I've never understood that. I'm not super tall, but I'm tall enough that my knees are in the seat in front of me on most coach airline seats.
I put the carry on behind my legs, feet under the seat in front, and recline like a motherfricker. That's the way to be comfortable. King shite.
Don't like recline? Fly Spirit or Allegiant.

There's a simple, passive aggressive solution to this that I utilize quite frequently. If your plane is a comfortable temperature or cold (this is better) and you don't anticipate needing the air, turn it on full fricking blast and point it as far forward as possible. They can recline at their own risk

I'm 6'6" and hate when people recline. I'm not gonna say anything about it unless it's a really long flight. If the person is nice and asks like Belle said, then I'll usually let them.
