Stenotrophomonas Maltophilia.

They just told my dad that this is what is infecting his lungs. Seems to be another hospital borne bacteria infection like Staff. I haven't been able to find much info about it. Obviously, I'm hoping its treatable. Dad has a bad heart to begin with and probably got it on one of his many visits to the hospital.

TIA.

As a young doctor, I have never heard of this bug. I just read some information about it, though, and it looks like a relative of the bacteria "pseudomonas"; I have seen a few cases of this. You are right, in that they are typically hospital born. There are a few specific antibiotics that should work, but they will have to culture and check sensitivities to make sure. Has your father been intubated prior to this illness?

Either way, I wish you and your father the best.
