Giving it a raw look (average team rankings score for the 2011-14 cycles), here are the top 10 teams in recruiting over the past four cycles, according to 247Sports team rankings, which exclusively uses 247Sports Composite rankings to calculate the score, which basically gives you the consensus of the entire recruiting industry. ??It’s no surprise which team is No. 1.
1. Alabama- 312.07 four-cycle average
2. Ohio State- 289.73
3. Florida State- 283.35
4. Florida- 275.74
5. LSU- 275.24
6. Georgia- 270.99
7. USC- 268.08
8. Auburn- 267.53
9. Notre Dame- 264.70
10. Texas- 263.37??
Only four classes during this stretch have totaled more than 300 points. Alabama 2014 (319.53), Alabama 2013 (319.48), Alabama 2012 (310.89), Ohio State 2013 (303.28).??Texas A&M, which has the No. 2 class in the country for 2015 (not included here), has a three-cycle average of 263.88, which would put the Aggies in the top 10. ??
Similarly, Michigan has a three-cycle average of 266.20- which would place the Wolverines in the top 10 if you take away the 2011 cycle.??Here are the top 10 individual classes during that span, numerically.
1. Alabama (2014)- 319.53
2. Alabama (2013)- 319.48
3. Alabama (2012)- 310.89
4. Ohio State (2013)- 303.28
5. LSU (2014)- 298.80
6. Alabama (2011)- 298.39
7. Ohio State (2014)- 296.06
8. Texas (2012)- 295.80
9. Florida (2013)- 291.51
10. Michigan (2013)- 289.17
He definitely is over the past 4 years.

Funny how a 48 year old journeymen with a hot head reputation found so much success at LSU before going to Alabama. He was not a good recruiter or coach pre LSU.

I think Bobby Bowden in his day was better.

That 2011 class was really weak

Ask the recruiting board

his record and recruiting classes actually progressed pretty evenly year to year. if you were to create a chart, it would create an almost perfect incline plateau-ing around 2008

Not saying Bama hasn't had the best classes, but points are skewed when you have a Bama alumnus that owns the site that rates the players.

It was amazing how so many 5 stars would just wake up on signing day and suddenly pick FSU.
Outside of maybe 2-3 classes, Saban has had the top recruiting class in the nation dating back to the early 2000s. That's amazing no matter where you are.

You're joking, right? If he was not a good coach pre LSU, then why the hell did you guys hire him?
As for the not a good recruiter part, I think Plaxico Burress, Julian Peterson, and Charles Rogers would disagree. He's always been a good recruiter and, like any other committed professional, he continued to get better at it over time.

Saban is right there with Pete Carroll in terms of pulling top talent. I give those two the nod over previous coaches because the competition for top recruits is much more highly contested now than even in the 90s. Both dominated their respective regions, and both were able to go well out of their recruiting area to pull players. I was always amazed at how many kids from Illinois, Ohio, New Jersey, etc. traveled across the country to play for a stacked USC team. I think USC pulled eight 5* recruits in a cycle once.
If I had to pick, I'd give Saban a slight edge because USC has more of a natural appeal to recruits considering the school's academic standing and the allure of Los Angeles.

Shannon Terry is:
A) not a Bama alumnus,
B) not the sole owner of 247 Sports, and
C) has no ownership stake in Rivals, Scout, or ESPN, which also rank Bama's classes very high.

Saban is a great recruiter. His numbers back it up. However, like every other coach in the world, he can only be that way at a place like Bama, LSU, Florida, Ohio St, etc. If Nick was the head coach of Kentucky, West Virginia, Rutgers or Utah, he wouldn't be bringing in #1 classes every year.
