This is what I worry about with juco transfers. These guys learn how to fill up stat sheets without regard to efficiency or good basketball. We are seeing it with Bowers, who I like and is a fun player to watch, but who clearly doesn't understand good/smart basketball and is very inefficient as a player.

I believe per the staff's basketball moneyball type metrics that Bowers has been the top guy on the team.

He turns the ball over a lot. Has a poor FG percentage. Inflates his rebounding total by grabbing his own missed lay ups. Plays ok on ball defense, but terrible help defense. Lastly, he gets to the line a bunch but only hits half of them on a good night.

He plays with good energy most nights and we would be a disaster without him, but he isn't efficient at all.

Don't shoot the messenger. I'm just passing on what Coach Pearl said in a presser a week or so ago.

Well, to be fair, we don't have any players that are very efficient. I don't know what metrics they are using, but it would be interesting to see. CB is shooting something like 30% in conference play. Turns the ball over a bunch and can't hit free throws. He rebounds well and draws a lot of fouls though.

From the article I read last week those are part of the metrics. So are things like not delivering a quality post entry pass, proper defensive rotation, etc.

Dunans will be a huge wildcard. If you watch his highlights he is an above the rim SG mismatch. He moves well with the ball and seems to understand his length advantage. I wouldn't say he is some elite ball handler but he looks comfortable with it. I imagine like Bowers he will have an adjustment period going up against better competition but he is a baller

His shooting is worse than the stat sheet suggests. He looks like Shawn Marion throwing it up except unlike The Matrix he can't make it go through the hoop

Coach Pearl wants more athletes on the team. He wants to be able to press and trap plus he wants to be able to play above the rim. So you add the recruiting class of Purifoy, Spencer, New Williams, Brown, and Dunans...that's a good blend of athletes and a shooter in Brown. Along with Canty who can handle, TSD and Lang who are shooters. Granger, Thompson and Purchase who will be a year older and stronger and are considered stretch 4s, with Cinnamon and Reed down low.

That is a NCAA tourney team

If Atewe comes back and Bowers loses weight we would be even better

1- Canty, New Williams
2- Dunans, Brown, TSD
3- Purifoy, Granger
4- Bowers, Spencer
5- Reed, Atewe

I'm not sure Bowers can be as effective with another big around the basket. I would like to see Bruce experiment a little with cb and Reed in at the same time some later this season.

Very unlikely to happen at any point this season given they are the only 2 bigs on the roster this season.

TSD will not be the 3rd man at the 2. He is too good defensively.

I'm sure we won't see it much, but I'm hoping he finds 5 minutes here and there to try it out. I just want to see how they can compliment each other, if at all.

I think there will be a trade-off in terms of rebounding but he would post up a 4 better than a 5. Against big teams, Bowers gets blocked a lot and can struggle occasionally.

E, I just meant guys I think make the rotation and get serious minutes. I see TSD getting time at the 1&2

But the post would be more crowded and neither cb or reed is a good enough shooter to draw a defender out and create space. That is my concern.

Looks like Pearl is trying to get Bowers to shoot. Talked about him doing it and Bowers is taking open shots. They are trying to develop it. He talks about Bowers growing to become more of a complete forward rather than C

Bowers is close to being able to drive with more refinement on 4 or 5s which means he can play in high post or on perimeter. Would be a matchup nightmare for a lot of 4s. Big guys can't keep him in front small guys will get backed down. If he drives leaves Reed/Atewe wide ipen
