Police chief killed during traffic stop

When shite like this was rare, cops were willing to keep their guns holstered longer.

Now for the question: what is the cause of more routine cop stuff going bad these days?

My guess is TV. In the movies, bad guy gets pulled over, bad guy blows cop away, bad guy drives off and there is not even so much as an investigation. And believe me, this world is full of people too stupid to know the difference.

TV doesn't have anything to do with it. I watched Scarface when I was younger. Didn't tempt me to turn into a drug king and face off with the cops.

It has far more to do with how some of these people were raised. When you're crying that your baby was a good boy when he has a sheet a mile long there's an issue there.

Is it really going bad or is it just publicized more?

I have a hard time believing cops weren't shooting people, and getting shot a lot more, back in the seventies and eighties when the crime rate was much higher almost everywhere.

I'd be really interested in seeing statistics on officer involved shootings over time, I wonder if they track that.

The way these events are publicized with a national media makes events on both sides of the spectrum seem more prevalent than they are. Fewer police were shot and killed last year than in any year since the 1800s.

I'd imagine that there were a lot more "accidents" or "suicides". And by imagine, I mean there were a lot more "accidents" and "suicides".

What Belle said is true.

It's never been rare. It happens with less frequency now than it used to LINK

Debatable. Especially if you include all media and not just TV.

That's a pretty damned important point if this stat is accurate... Especially taking into consideration population growth.

It sounds like a similar situation to child kidnappings. Parents don't want to let their kids out of their sight, because they think a predator is lurking on every corner. It turns out that child kidnappings are actually down, but media coverage is up ten fold.

Yep. It's highly likely that child molestations, abductions were far more prevalent per capita in previous years, but we just hear much more about it today. This "What is the world coming to" hand wringing coincided with the explosion of cable news, then the internet.

Suggestion. Reduce traffic stops. Does not prevent crime. Problem solved.

I can't figure out why anyone is trigger happy, not just the police. But I do know the common denominator.

I touched on this before.

When people are willing to kill you over a few days in jail or even a traffic ticket, and people can attain weapons with very little restriction -- our police must maintain a different presence.

Belle, they do follow what they see in movies/tv to an extent. One year we had 4 kids try to Rob a bank like they saw in some movie with presidential masks and all (not Point Break). They barely made it around the block.

This, in the 70s and 80s they didn't have the 24/7 news cycle we have and every place virtually connected.

So, are you saying that the public should be prepared to protect themselves from the police?

I heard the plan was for police to shoot all the dogs, therefore taking away happiness from children. Then they can control their emotions and turn them into a slave-like force. Their main task being producing and selling corn byproducts. It's sad that people aren't taking this threat more seriously.

Hate to tell you.. The Genie, is not going back into the bottle.
Do you want to send people with guns, to take away my guns? Or do you advocate that we all come to an agreement, that we will all melt our guns together at the same time? I would be on board with this, do you think we can trust all the others to do it also? We can trust them all... right?

That milk was spilled a long time ago.
