Ok, Texas and California are huge states with massive populations, so there is going to be more on average going to them.
The real eye poppers are Bama, Georgia, and Michigan. And then of course Mississippi and Louisiana who didn't get any.
That is a major line between Bama and MS, frick.

Jefferson County, here.. got over $25 million in equipment.

I'd guess Huntsville would be the main reason for the high number.

When the military gives, Birmingham area police departments take, picking up the stuff they could never buy otherwise.
Trussville police have an armored truck because of the Department of Defense's 1033 program. Pelham and Leeds have night vision goggles, and Gardendale picked up M-14 and M-16 rifles.
Irondale has gotten everything from Humvees and four-wheel drives to laptops and actual boots for the ground. And Jefferson County has two helicopters.

Here's a look at the local distribution of equipment through 1033 in Jefferson County, according to a New York Times breakdown: Night vision pieces, 832; body armor pieces, 239; assault rifle, 95; pistol, 36; shotgun, 4; helicopter, 2; mine-resistant vehicle, 2.

That's one of my biggest gripes about this, these billy bob cops are armed and equipped better than I was in Iraq. And against it's own citizens? frick that.
Some of these pics with SWAT (or whatever they're called now) show dudes armed not too far off than one of our military's operators.

Can be used for other things besides explosive grenades, FWIW. Like tear gas, rubber ball grenades, etc...

Explains why most cops in Alabama suck so bad.

I would have thought SC would have received more given our extremely large military presence in this state.

Militarization of police forces? I would hope most of AL's resides in Huntsville, considering it is a military hub. Couple that with ANAD, it isn't surprising AL tops the list.
I hate the fact cops carry automatic rifles in their trunks though.

Thank God they got those mine resistant vehicles for all the fricking minefields in Alabama.
We're giving cops better equipment than we give our regular military, and we're not training them nearly as well. That sounds like a recipe for success to me.

Alabama is currently suspended from the program until it gets its paperwork in. Is that map for the last year? The linked article states "Federal records show that since 2006, Alabama has received $117 million in equipment, second only to Florida at $252 million." LINK
