I've been approached about a position open in Anniston and it would involve me having to move there. I know nothing about the area and was wondering what are the good areas to look at. Just a quick google search gave me only a few apartments renting but I'm sure that there are some nicer ones out there.

Educate me on the area. I'm mid twenties, single, beer drinkin, cussin, spittin, hell raisin, God fearing good ole boy.

Anniston/Oxford is pretty terrible and boring. Gadsden is about 30 minutes North on 431, and Jacksonville State is pretty close, for when you want to go trolling for some freshman poon. I live about 45 minutes from Anniston. It's about an hour and a half from the ATL, I consider that a good thing.

Enjoy your PCB's and cancer.

Never lived there, but Anniston seems pretty lame the times I've visited. I'd probably look at living in Gadsden and commuting. It's about 30 minutes. Gadsden isn't much better, but at least they have a brewery and a few decent, non-chain, restaurants.

Well it's a good opportunity for me and good money can be made. If offered I couldn't turn it down.

Also, the cost of living difference between there and Birmingham will also make a pretty big difference too. If you move to Gadsden, they'll never get us out of Babes.

I will consider moving to Gadsden. How long of a drive is it to Anniston down 431/21?

It is pretty dead. Anniston died off when the base closed down. Oxford is okay, but it is just chain restaurants and a mall.

Mt. Cheaha is close and there is a lot of good hiking in the area. Gadsden is definitely better. You might want to consider it, if you don't mind the commute. Like was posted earlier, it is a short trip to Birmingham and Atlanta.

It's not bad at all, and it's a straight shot. 30 minutes and 55mph and 65mph the whole way. Minimal traffic once outside Gadsden. Jacksonville would be a good spot for you too. It's about 15 minutes away from Anniston and nice apartments are relatively cheap, even though it's a college town. Decent bars and restaurants too. Its a small town but has quite a bit to do, and is in close proximity to a lot more.

It's pretty bad man. It was probably better when the base was open. If you move there I'll buy you a drink at Christmas.

I really need to get a more fuel efficient truck. I want one of the newer F-150's with the turbo V6. My King Ranch has the 5.4L V8, 4x4, and lower geared for towing. It gets terrible gas mileage.

There's something to this. The Army depot was a chemical warfare agent depository for decades. I have in-law family from that area and an alarming number of them have suffered from unusual illnesses.

I lived in the Anniston/Oxford area my whole life. Anniston itself is a shithole. Crime is terrible. But if you're going to work in Anniston then either Jacksonville or Oxford is your best bet to find a house. Two good areas with lots of awesome scenery (at least IMO). Oxford has the far superior school system though. Virtually every school in that area is part of the Calhoun County school system - save Oxford.

Anniston is also a shitty place to live long-term. If I am looking to start a family I sure as hell ain't gonna do it there.
