Arkansas is one of many states which do not have any statewide anti-discrimination laws protecting LGBT persons in areas of employment and public accommodation.

The city of Fayetteville is attempting to extend those protections to LGBT people in the city with a new city ordinance which would outlaw housing, employment and public accommodation discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

Fayetteville is generally pretty liberal, but the surrounding metro and counties are not. The Duggars live just north outside of Springdale. Michelle Duggar and friends have formed a coalition to stop this new law, and Michelle lent her voice to a robocall going around Fayetteville urging people to oppose the ordinance, which has drawn national attention to the issue over the past 48 hours.

This is pretty riveting, albeit local, political stuff. Lots of Baptists (most of whom seem to be from outlying areas) spoke out against it at the last meeting. A council member admonished them as having darkness in their hearts, etc. At least one city coucil member, as well as the mayor's chief of staff, are openly gay.

Gay supporters are wearing red, while anti gays are wearing purple tonight.

Cray cray. Twitter tags #fairfayetteville for pictures and tweets of the meeting.

The reds appear to be in the huge majority.

I don't really care about the Duggars or what they believe, but they don't even live in Fayetteville. They need to frick off.

That should be a minimum requirement for speaking at the meeting, IMO.

Wow, the gay friendlies are bringing it tonight. The line to speak on the ordinance stretches out city hall, down the block and around the corner.

The opposition overplayed their hand. They organized and overtook the last meeting, and it turned out most of them were exposed as non-Fayetteville residents with an anti-gay agenda.

That seems to have rallied unprecedented support. The Duggars getting involved was the last straw. Do not frick with Fayetteville's liberals. They will frick you up.

They don't live in the ville. I think there needs to be an ordinance to sew shut that gaping baby shooter's count up.

I imagine there were a lot of "Aw hell nah" reactions when people here got the robocall. That was a stupid move by the Duggars.

Bitch, its been Gayetteville since 1871 when the first queer arse college kids unloaded their candy asses from the stagecoach at the bottom of the Hill.

Did I do that right?

There's video available at the link if anyone is interested. This kind of local political battle is vintage Fayetteville.

IMO the ordinance is a disaster and will probably be negated in court.

If you want to protect them in employment, cool, but there are already federal laws dictating this right? Public accommodation is IMO, a step waaay too far. I believe the hippies will also agree when dudes start destroying the stalls at Panera Bread.

Also, you left out that you cannot discriminate based on socioeconomic status. So, you can't deny somebody an apartment or rent house based on their ability to pay. This is fricking nuts and needs to be removed from the ordinance.

I think that's a really imaginative interpretation of the ordinance.

No, there aren't any federal laws protecting people from employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. Currently it's state-by-state.

Actually, no. There is not a federal law. Some states protect LGBT people from employment discrimination. Arkansas, and no southern states, actually, provide that protection.

This law would make Fayetteville one of the only cities in the state where you can't explicitly fire someone for their sexual orientation.
