Swimming as Part of Weekly Workout

I want to try to add some in to my routine for cardio and losing weight. I did some laps today..... Wow!
Anyway, is there anything to this other than just swimming laps? I alternated between (5) different strokes and did laps for 30 mins. Is that ok or do I need a different routine?
Also, any recommendations for goggles or ear plugs? I rock the buzz cut some no goofy skull cap for me.

Best shape of my life was a few years ago when I was swimming 30 laps (roughly a mile) every morning and working out in the evening. I just used some basic goggles from Dicks and if there was nobody else there I'd use the snorkle too (made it easier to just keep going) but I was normally embarrassed.

I swim laps 3-4 times a week. I just alternate laps between freestyle and breaststroke mostly. Sometimes I'll get a kickboard and just work my legs.
I just got the standard Speedo goggles, and don't use earplugs.
There are some more specialized things you can do, but I've never tried them. There's a foam wedge you can put between your thighs, but I have no idea the benefit. Lot of people at the pool I swim at do it though.

swim laps after my workout, about 20-25 laps. it's really helping a lot plus you get to look at girls in swimsuits

I usually swim about 25-30 laps in the pool either before or after a workout. I like it for the low impact cardio

I saw some shite the other day about how until we're 40 we worry about what others think. At 40 we stop giving a shite. Then at 60 we realize no one ever gave a shite about us.
It's cheesy and generic, but it makes sense and it's a great way to live life. Do you, brother.

I'm 40 and don't give a shite.
I can't imagine swimming laps after a weight lifting session. I usually have two cardio days and planned on incorporating swimming there.

Yeah the only place you'll find me after an intense upper body workout is on the couch watching ESPN or SECN.

A good recommendation is run swim run. Go run/jog for 20 mins, swim, then run. A hour workout that will ensure you drop weight fast.
I do this before work in the morning, then lift after work. It might be hard if your gym doesn't have a track or area to run outside of it.

Doing elliptical for 30 mins and swim for 30 mins on my non-weight days. Just 30 mins cardio on lifting days.

One thing I added is treading water for an hour a day (in the deep end) without touching the sides of the pool.
Then you can add a weight belt when this becomes easy and do most of it under water holding your breath. Just something about oxygen deprivation makes your metabolism go crazy.
I know it sounds a little nuts, but when I'm ten or fifteen feet under water I do my best problem solving and it's become a major a part of my lifestyle.
I also work from a standing office, chairs kill people.
I'm a little out there.

I'm just posting this here so that when I try this and they find my weighted body at the bottom of the pool they can check my internet history and see I wasn't trying to off myself on purpose.

As a former college swimmer this thread delivered some lolz... just swimming laps isn't the best way to get your cardio up. doing a set of 100s on an interval were you're only getting 10-15 seconds rest after putting in a good effort is more effective. we used to do a 3000 yard/meter race and then base our seasonal training off that average. seems a bit extreme in your case lol, but it's what I know. you haven't lived until you've ran in the scorching Florida sun after doing 12,000 meters in the pool. always run first... nobody likes sweating minutes after getting out of a pool.
for right now just swimming back and forth is the right thing. let muscle memory adjust to the activity. goggle suggestions... truly personal preference. I wore one kind until I was 14 or so then switched and haven't looked back. unless you're highly prone to ear infections don't be that guy with ear plugs or even worse a nose clip. if you do start to develop an infection or are generally worried vinegar+rubbing alcohol=smelly, yet effective. umm feel free if y'all have anything more specific feel free to ask.
Spleen the foam wedge is a pull buoy. it's to keep you from kicking (as much) and just working the upper body. it's basically the opposite of a kickboard, which may also be used as a pull buoy in a pinch lol. the hardcore version is using old tire tube and banding the legs together at the ankles (like a lobster) with no floatation. real dead weight there.
