Where they think teams end up? Where they finished last year? Combo of both? Or just drawing out of a hat?

The folks who didnt watch anything other than the NC game and the highlights of the UGA and Bama games think Auburn was lucky.
I think that disrespect is a factor, but... if you look at the rankings it shows 1-5 every conference represented before another SEC team (AU) On that basis, i think its anti-SEC political correctness bullshite.
The all time national melt would be an All SEC playoff or an all SEC NC again.

I don't agree with being out of the top 5. Anything out of 10 is ridiculous. But again, preseason rankings are fricking dumb.

From years and years of listening to the thought process.........the variables change from team to team. Team A is listed lower because they have a new QB, while that is not counted against team D. Team B has a tough schedule so we will list them lower than team.........and so on and so forth. The pre-season shite hasn't and won't change. It's all about the name on the front of the jersey. Those are the same "beauty contestant judges" we have always had. Hopefully the people in charge of the playoff system will get it right.

Because voting "standards" are always flexible according to how the voter WANTS to vote. Always have been, always will be. Hell, the same voter can flex his "standard" from one year to the next according to who he really wants to vote for.
