Educate a Millenial: Why did so many fans wear white back in the day?

Stupid and irrelevant question but I've always wondered this. Watching the 1980 SC-UGA game now and so many people are wearing white and this seems to be true for almost all fan bases when classic games are on? Why is that? Was it just the fad of the day? Was school merchandise not as readily available reason?

Color wasn't invented until 1998.

Things were more dressed up. Usually you wore at least a white button down, khaki trousers, and street shoes. You cheered the team and did not have to wear the gear. Along came Nike and sold us on having to buy their crap if were a real fan. Couple that with the vagabond look taking over and it all went to hell.

Because it was cool ... and in temperature cool. Stadiums were still hot back then and more people had common sense. White was cooler in the day games than were darker colors.

Also, white t-shirts were more common, with screen printing.

White is a hell of a lot cooler, and in the era before white/black/team color outs there was no reason to wear a dark shirt to an SEC game in September.

100% cotton was cooler than the poly blends you have now with the stuff they sell now.

Before that pixels had to be hand painted with white out.

this would be my best guess, coupled with the fact that shirts breathe so much better nowadays

I understand that white is cooler but it's not like it isn't hot today.

I'm leaning towards it being the fad of the day that changed into colors being the fad.

Hell yes. Those shirts were 100% thick heavy cotton and when they got wet with sweat they were like having an air conditioner on your body evaporating coolness.

Even the women wore white t-shirts. The wet t-shirt contests were born in those days. Nips were everywhere.

This thread confuses me, for some reason I always imagined you were older. Not SCrooster old but like late middle aged at least.

Wearing white is smart at a hot game, if that's your main concern.

I'd say once games were on TV much more regularly people cared a lot more what they wore and what the stadium looked like.

Prior to cable TV and the rule changes in the 1980's, there were like 3-4 games on a weekend.
