On Wednesday, Mason puffed out his SEC chest and told 104.5 The Zone in Nashville he believes the Commodores’ talent is comparable, if not better, than what he had at Stanford as the program’s defensive coordinator.

“To be honest, I think we’re equally as talented if not more, defensively,” Mason said. “We’re big up front. Our backers are fast. They’re extremely fast. And secondary wise, it’s probably very similar. (Stanford) has a talented secondary back there. They are more proven because they’ve played more ball.

Uhh Oh! Is Vandy an up and coming beast? Or is Mason just giving the fans (however few they are) what they need?

“As I compare the Pac-12 to the SEC, I think the SEC is better in the upper half, but I think the Pac-12 is better from top to bottom,” Mason said. “But I would still give the edge to the SEC in terms of what it looks like and how the game is played.”

Just shows how strong the SEC is. Vandy would win the PAC.

. @ToddFuhrman tells us Stanford would open between a 17-21 point favorite over Vanderbilt on a neutral field.

I feel like Bert went through the same thing. He got to Arky and said "Holy crap, this roster is way more talented than any Wincy team I had. I am going to kill people."

And then the season starts are you are playing NFL teams basically that would crush Wincy's skull. Same thing here.

Vandy would wreck shop in the PAC 12, but this isn't the PAC12. I know people who beat off to old man football think otherwise, but in either the Big 12 or the SEC Stanford would be a middle of the pack team.

Stanford would not be middle of the pack in the SEC and Vandy would not wreck shop in the PAC12. Jesus Christ.

Auburn is a better Oregon, so they beat Stanford. LSU and BAMA are the same style as Stanford but with more talent so they would win. All it would take for a middle of the pack finish is a freak upset by someone else, which can happen (like when they lost to freaking Utah).

Meanwhile the PAC is a two-horse league right now with Stanford and Oregon. UCLA and USC are rising, but right now if put in the right division Vandy would cause problems.

You can thank the despised James Franklin for that, Vandy. You're lucky you had him.

The defense is going to be really solid, which is what he's talking about in the quote. Young but talented.

I agree. He left a boatload of talented redshirt freshmen from a top 20 class.

So Vandy would be top 4 team in the PAC 10? GTFO with that noise.

Even if Mason believes what he said, why would a first year coach at a place that just came off two historic seasons.(sad but true), say that to the media.

He is either not smart or very confident. Sorry, I love the SEC, but I doubt Vandy is playing at Stanford's level right now remotely soon.

That might make it difficult for Auburn to catch Vanderbilt in the all time series.

I work at Vandy and was running around campus earlier. Heard crown noise coming from the stadium and found an open gate and walked on in. They were doing a first team O vs. D scrimmage.

The defense forced two turn-overs in 10-min: a fumble recovery and a pick. Course that could also speak to how bad the offense will be.

Arkansas had some talent last year but they were young and didn't have any depth. That's what killed them.
