"South Carolina’s first opponent of the season, Texas A&M, has won 20 games in the last two years, but Steve Spurrier isn’t as impressed by that as some others."

quote:

"Last year, the Aggies played Rice, Sam Houston State, SMU and UTEP in their non-conference schedule. Spurrier referred to those team as “barely Division I.”

“I find it interesting that they quit playing Texas,” Spurrier said. “They played Texas 115 years like we have played Clemson and then they left that Big 12 conference and both schools got mad at each other and said, ‘We aren’t going to play you anymore.’ It would be like us and Clemson saying we are not playing anymore. Our whole state would go crazy. The governor would get involved in that.”

I mean its not like we had an OOC agreement that went out the window with arky and its not like anyone in the big 12 will play us anytime soon. But we are playing ASU next year, UCLA after that, and Oregon after that

Spurrier clearly overestimates the power of the Governor's office in the state of Texas.

Furthermore, A&M is playing Arizona State, UCLA, and Oregon over the next 5 years after this one.

I can't wait to see Sumlin's response.

I love it when Grinders mention the "ten-win Rice team" they played in the Liberty Bowl

Wonder how SOS would like to play an SECW schedule?

Spurrier is so much more likable as he gets older...although it could be that he is at USCe instead of UF and not hanging 50 on everybody

clearly he was addressing the fact that A&M won 20 games in the past two years with the help of a poor OOC schedule. he's not saying you guys don't play anyone hard ever

seeing as he's beaten 4 of the 7 west teams the last time he's played them, with a chance to make it 6 out of 7 during this season, I'm sure he wouldn't mind

The thing that most people overlook is that A&M had a 10 year deal to play Arkansas as an out of conference foe years before moving to the SEC. This was while Arkansas was consistently ranked it the top 25 before the implosion and coaching changes there. So it's not like we were looking to load up on other power conference foes for our OOC schedule.

So yeah, our OOC schedule has been shite for the first couple of years since we joined the SEC and our 10 year deal with the razorbacks turned into an in division game. But as many have pointed out, the next 5 years are already set with bigger OOC names.

And of course the sips refused to play us after we peaced out of the big dumpster fire conference. OBC just trying to rustle some jimmies in that regard.
