Does it bother you that Missouri is getting no "respect" this preseason?

The pundits all seem to agree, Missouri was a fluke last year. This season will be back to the norm, (whatever that means).
Funny that aTm is expected to compete in the West, without JFF, Mike Evans, and those offensive lineman they lost. Also, let's not forget how bad that d was last year.
Yet Missouri is screwed because we lost senior WR's and D line guys. Honestly, no one thought anything of any of those guys going into last year, but now losing them is devastating? I guess if we compete this season, we'll have the same problems next year too? When will these folks figure out GP has a system, it starts with recruiting and continues with player development. It's not like this is something new.
Sadly, if we do win the east again, it will be because the east is down. We're just that terrible.
I tend to think 2012 was the fluke season, especially given the overall product of the last 7 years. I like being under the radar, and I hope these guys use it as a motivator again this season.
Looks like respect will have to be earned again, time for the boys to do some work.

No, it doesn't bother me really. I think Georgia is the best team in the East and that the next three are close between South Carolina/Mizzou/Florida. So if folks pick Mizzou anywhere from 2-4th in the division I think thats ok in my book as it could play out that way.

I think this is the PERCEPTION of Missouri:
We don't recruit well by SEC standards, so we just don't have the athletes or depth.
We develop players over five years where other schools lose kids after 2 or 3. That extra maturity makes our kids productive but not as talented.
Last year we had a lot of senior (fifth year especially) leadership which graduated and left the cupboard bare.
On this year's team we have neither the depth, the experience nor the top tier talent to continually fend off the more historical programs that always recruit much better than us. Add to that their catastrophic injuries last year which prevented them from beating us like they usually will and you have in place a perceived regression to the mean, which for us is 4th place.
On the good side, there is also the perception we'll be a bowl team at around 8-4, just not a contender. I don't think so, but until we play the games we won't know who is right and who is wrong.

If it helps any body feel better, Sports Illustrated has Mizzou in their top 25.

Would rather have it that way. Mizzou won't get that kind of respect until they win something more than a divisional title. Don't even know if winning the SEC would be enough to be taken serious by the national pundits.

Yea I don't like hearing all the SEC news and not having Mizzou included in the mix of "contenders", but if anything it's an advantage for the team, the play w/ a chip, "they don't respect you" bulletin board factor, could always help, but it sure isn't going to hurt.
The facts are these, if we manage to knock off either UGA or USC or both, we are instantly the talk of the SEC East, at least up until we lose, anyway so it's all right there in front of us for the taking.
Unless the remainder of the East folds up with massive injuries I don't see any chance of another division win winding up like last season, if we pull off the repeat, we will be in the discussions of the major media coverage.
First we have to actually do it though, sure Fla and UGA can be better this year, but so can we.
If I have to bet on who wins the East right now, today, I like our chances as well as UGA or USC, so it's a push in my book. That's a lot better than what we thought going into last season at this time.

It irritates me, but OTOH it makes it that much sweeter when we win,and better yet blow them off the field.

Exactly, I'm not saying they will win the east. However, they should be right in the middle of the battle for it.
The disrespect doesn't really bother me, but the notion that the east is weak if we compete or win it really rustles my jimmies.

I agree with most of what you have said here. I only disagree with the depth issue and actually its a partial disagreement. I personally believe Missouri is way undervalued and thats because of that perception you speak of. In the trenches I have extreme confidence we could play with anyone in this league at the point of attack. On defense we have 2 ends who have the potential to put up eye popping numbers and can go 6 deep at the DT spot. On offense many believe we have one of the best centers in the league and return 2 other starters who shredded opponents on the ground. If we can control the line of scrimmage we will be ok, against anyone in this league because every team has big flaws.

I think the only reason it bothers me is the exposure that the Tigers lose by not being ranked... being in the top 25 gets the Tigers' brand out there on magazines, espn, nationally televised games, college game day and all that. All that exposure can definitely affect recruiting.... especially now that we are in the SEC.

I don't think Missouri was a fluke last year, IMO ya'll were the best team. I thought Mauk should have never been taken out after Franklin got healthy. Mauk is a great QB, but I think this year SCAR might have the edge in the east with ya'll coming in second.

The Tigers made SI's Top 25 coming in at #22. I'd call that respect.

Same thing every year. I don't pay attention to this stuff at all.

countrygrammar, I think we completely agree, because what I posted is is the PERCEPTION of us, which is all I was addressing. Our depth with great athletes at most positions is much better than anybody outside of Tiger fans and our media know about.

It annoys me personally. I think it is negative for our recruiting and overall negative for the program.
Silver lining, as mentioned already, is victory and success is that much sweeter.

It doesn't really bother me. Winning solves everything. If we are good enough, it'll work itself out and then the talking heads have some 'splaining to do.
Besides, we play better as underdogs. I like the chip on their shoulders to be big.

I mind not because of feeling good or bad about the team I don't need the pundits for that. I mind because it is perception of the program and that DOES effect recruits. Why do you think we lose our backyard and kids head to Oregon and Bama. Sure Bama wins natties but Oregon has done little more then us and kids flock there. why???? perception, good news if we keep winning in the SEC, unlike the Big 12-2+2-2 things will change.

I don't think anyone thinks that. It's just that there are other teams in the east that right now look to have a better chance at winning the division. That's not really a slight at Missouri.

Perception is reality to most people even when their perception is wrong. Most of the time, pre-season pundits get it wrong when picking who they think will win the East and West divisions in the SEC.
What does that say about them?
