Way back in the 1970s, long distance service was strictly regulated and virtually locked under AT&T. The FCC deregulated and broke up AT&T, leading to the creation of the "baby bells". Other companies such as the Southern Pacific Railroad had developed internal networks for communication that they were now able to expand. This led to the creation of the Southern Pacific Railroad Internal Network Telecommunications company, or as we now know them, S.P.R.I.N.T.

Huh? Nothing trivial about that subject.

I've often wondered how long Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Instant Video, etc., were going to get away with what they've taken for granted up to now. In 5 years (if that long) I suspect free movies/TV will go away as the demand increases. Something's gotta give. We'll see.

There were 7 Baby Bells...

The ones in the east coast merged to form Verizon
NYNEX + Bell Atlantic

The ones in the south merged to form the new AT&T
Southwestern Bell + Bell South + Ameritech + Pac Tel

The one on the west coast went from US West to Qwest to CenturyLink (headquartered in Monroe, LA)
