We will be fine this year because of how last year ended. Motivation and focus will not be a problem.

That said, I'm more concerned now than a few months ago. Losing kozan is the biggest reason. Lawsons injury is reason number 2. Now I'm just hoping thereize thing is not true.

Do not want anymore bad news. We are gonna be better overall this year than last, but the schedule is MUCH tougher.

I disagree. The catalyst for our rushing attack was Marshall and his zone read ability. Marshall returns the run game will be dominate again

Second drug offense. It is starting to look like it is just an unfounded rumor at this point and not true, but you never know.

Just don't want anymore bad news. Outside of Marshall and Reese, it could be argued Kozan was our most important offensive player. Lawson could be argued as our best defensive player.

That is enough bad luck for me this fall. We got some high quality depth, but only so much of it.

Within the program he has. The players feed off of his confidence. Not trashing Chizik or Tubs but he really does have total control/focus of the team on the football field. I've always kinda not bought into the figurehead coaching type.

I believe our offense will be BETTER. More time in the system, deeper in the play book, plus a much improved passing attack. We have replacements for Kozan.

Defense will also be better, better LB play is the key. Losing Lawson is huge, but can be overcome.

Kicking game is my biggest concern.

Coaching: everyone is back which is huge.

Motivating is there.

Forget the old ways of Tubs, we are about to be consistently good.

The culture changed a few years back and everyone is still trying to catch up.

Mason's incredible success must be shared with the entire offense and coaches( + S&C ). Gus's handling of Chris Todd in 2009 is a beautiful example. The talent that will be on the field this year is going to scare the crap out of the SEC and has me giddy as hell! It will only be a little different conceptually than last year...but far more dangerous.

On the D side, it's easy to overlook the disaster they inherited from G-D Roof.
To begin the season with key players injured or kicked off the team, with Holland as your starting MLb every single game and a serious lack of talent and depth, these guys produced a top 10 in the nation red zone defense. The challenges they face this year is nowhere near what they had to deal with last year. It will be young, but deeper and more talented.

EJ is exploring several options to replace Lawson. In three weeks I believe he will have more than one solution. If we had lost Dee Ford last year we would've been sunk.

Just my opinion

Uzomah didn't, but he was hurt much of that season.

More than any other HC in my lifetime, Malzahn seems to really enjoy the long hours and hard work involved in getting a team ready for each and every game. I just don't see us ever losing because we come out flat or poorly prepared.

I agree. Malzahn wakes up thinking about football and goes to bed thinking about football. He and the players have a bad taste in their mouths from how last season ended. Every interview a player gives, they talk about it. They have been busting their arses this offseason. They'll be ready.

Also, I know Lawson is a good player. But I there were many games last year that Owens outplayed him, including the NC. Many are overlooking Owens, and I think he is going to show out this year. And remember that Holland is gone and Mocrief is gonna be a beast. The defense will be better than last year.

I'm fired up!

Gus: "I'm a little disappointed in my team personally," Malzahn said. "We were the defending champs and we were leading after the first game, but we folded like a cheap tent. Besides that it was a wonderful night of fellowship, but it disappointed me on the way home. I'll be honest with you it's still on my mind."

Okay, so he's talking bowling, BUT... I don't doubt for a minute the last minute of the BCS NCG eats him up.

Prior to Gus, we had no fundamental foundation to become a powerhouse, we were just hoping the stars would align. That was Auburn football.

Gus changes everything. And the lost NCG adds fuel to the fire.

I'd love to have seen Chris Davis intercept Crablegs with 13 seconds left in the game to seal the most magical season in CFB history. And I think Gus would've put together good to great teams in the years to come.

But now, I don't doubt 2013 will eat him up for years to come and that focus will rub off on the players no matter how many NCs they win. Gus would probably have to win several NCGs to get over January something 2014.

That's a change.

The only point I been trying to make is that there's been a fundamental change in how athletics at Auburn will operate.

I'm excited as Hell about what's happening with Gus & staff in the football program. I've been waiting to see this for very long time. The gumps still refuse to accept the fact that this man has beaten them twice already and so has our defensive coordinator. Will probably do it again this year.

I'm just saying there's a larger view than just football. Has Bruce Pearl changed the basketball culture at Auburn? Christ, he hasn't even played a game yet. Everyone on tRant said there is no way Pearl would come to Auburn.

I realize most people here don't care that much about women's sports. I do. Clint Myers was a major-league higher in women's softball, and if I'm not mistaken, produced the best record in the history of the program in his first year. If Sonny Galloway does not produce he will be gone just like Chizik.

Auburn hires coaches to win national championships, not to be competitive or have winning records, not just to beat the gumps and other such nonsense. If they can win at Auburn he or she has it made. It's heaven! It's their program to run as they see fit and they are paid handsomely, and loved for it.

Every human on earth that has an interest in college football knows of Auburn and we are building on that success. We absolutely hired a genius.

I don't want to attract a lot of criticism from my viewpoint, but my jury is still out on Gus and how he is changing our program.

Is one year enough time to see legitimate changes that he has induced?

I have full confidence in Gus and am thrilled after last season (my last as an AU student...it meant a lot to me), but I feel naive to all the sudden put Gus on a pedestal...I wanna see more built on last season and a sustained success.

He can do it...he's an incredible architect of football, one of the most creative, innovative coaches in the game. It's neat to realize when you watch Auburn football, you're actually seeing where the game is going in terms of evolution.

Football is becoming more fluid. The game isn't as broken-up into plays as it was in the past. Our coach is leading this evolution, and I don't see how that cannot lead to major success... I just have to wait.

Sorry for the length...thx for reading.

watching Saban and fat Bert basically petition the NCAA for a rule change, and the media's response, was pure gold. I don't know if there is an easy answer to what Gus is doing. It could demand imitation. In 2-3 years could the gumps be running the HUNH?

I think you are asking this question to two groups: the fans and the players.

The fans will always look at recent history and take expectations from there. Let's be honest, recent history has been a roller coaster for us for the past 10 years. It will take a few years of consistency for the fans to adjust to the winning mentality.

As for the team, they will always assume the mentality of the head coach. Period. Gus has been a winner everywhere he has been, and that is a reflection of his preparation and confidence. Players take notice of that and adopt the same attitude.

I feel pretty good about the season, we have a tough schedule and are missing some players who were underrated as far as how much they helped the team from last year.

I'm hoping for a 10 win regular season with our losses being close ones. If we prove we are a top team and play that way its the mark of a change.

If our defense stops giving up big plays and gets off the field just a bit better and the passing game gets a bit more consistent we could repeat.
