Has Malzahn changed the culture at Auburn?

Anyone else still feel weird about being ranked so high right off the bat? I'm just going to be honest, I want this team to have the confidence that Alabama has had the last few years. Will Malzahn have the team focused? Has the culture changed from the days when we played best under the radar?

I guess we'll find out this year wether we can deal with expectations. Before then it's pretty much impossible to tell

Only time will tell. I can honestly admit that it has me worried being a favorite going into the season. Not because I don't think we can handle it, but because I have gotten use to that not being a good sign.

Yes. My entire life it has been an attitude of winning with D. All of Auburn's great coaches had that mentality. Now the attitude is outscoring people. I enjoy watching the fast paced, wide open, scoring drives even with little time on the clock attitude.

As the season gets closer and I watch more and more replays while working, I am starting to get the "Worries.
1. Mason was a beast last year. Dude was a down hill runner and a battering ram at times. I have said for a year that Cap was going to be great. I hope he is also watching what Mason did last year and is ready to do the same. We need that type of a runner.
2. There is no replacing Prosch. Dude was the best lead blocker we have had in a long time. Watching him work in the replays makes me wonder who and when we will have another guy like him.
3. Injuries - Losing Carl was huge. Don't kid yourself. He probably was our best defensive player. He gone.
4. Kozan was another loss. But I am more confident we can replace him.
5. If the rumors are true about Therozie, we screwed. He is now our best defensive player. Dude will knock your head off and we need his physicality.
I would love to see us just run the offensive very similar to last year. Doesn't really matter if you have time to prepare for it. If we are more physical at the line and our backs are bulldozers, we cant be stopped. Not sure that will be the case and we will lean on the passing game more. Does not make this old school guy happy.
But I still think we will be strong. Just very different.

Gus is one of the most confident men in any profession. The reason he's so confident, he's also one of the hardest working men in any profession.
That rubs off on people when you're around people like that. Our guys will mirror his actions and we'll be just as effective as frontrunners.

What is strange with me, I don't follow recruiting or read practice notes at all now. I have full confidence Gus will have us ready to go for the first game. The guy eats and breaths football. I'll just show up on 8/30, expecting to kick arse.

Going strictly by the AP polls, 2014 will in all likelihood be the 17th time in our history where we will be ranked in the top 10 preseason.
Of those 16 previous seasons, we finished the year still in the top 10 six times (1958, 1983, 1987-9, and 2006). We ended up ranked 11-25 in four other seasons (1971, 1984, 1990 and 1995). The other six times we were in the preseason top 10, we finished unranked (1959, 1964, 1975, 1985, 2003, and 2008).
With the exception of Shug's NCAA-sanctioned squads in 1957-58, only Dye's superb teams of the late 80s and Tubs' 2005-06 teams have managed to live up to expectations in consecutive years.
In contrast, 2013 was the 13th time in AU history wherein we finished ranked in the final AP polls, after starting out the year either totally unranked or one of the teams receiving votes but outside of the top 25. And last year was the fourth time (along with 1972, 1974, and 1993) that AU finished in the top 10 after not receiving a single AP vote in the presason poll.

I get the same worries. Mason and Prosch cannot be replaced. If we pull it off this year, it will be because of the passing game and then everyone will have to acknowledge the genius of Gus.
I worry on defense about the loss of Ford's infectious spark. After the A&M game last year he said "we coming" and said something about playing for the national title and I was sitting there saying whoa, pump the brakes dude. Do we have a guy like that on the team?

So before we throw out this "can't be replaced" thing, why don't we actually see what happens on the field first.
This is nothing against those players, but we've been recruiting with the best of them for the past 4 years. So if Gus really is a great coach, we shouldn't see a drop off.

Excellent points. "Cannot" was too strong a word. I have been expecting a good running attack, just not as good as last year. Last year we could bully our way even when the defense knew it was coming. This year likely won't repeat that exact attack, but Gus will brew up something that suits the personnel. That is what makes his team so much fun to watch.

I was a Mason fan from 2012. I said on numerous times that I was a huge fan and thought he would be great. I also think Cap can be great.

To respond to the OP, I'd like to think that Gustav has indeed brought about a New Day at AU.
More than any other HC in my lifetime, Malzahn seems to really enjoy the long hours and hard work involved in getting a team ready for each and every game. I just don't see us ever losing because we come out flat or poorly prepared.
It's always been my dream that we would have an HC who loved game-planning as much as Tubs loved duck hunting, or Bowden loved talking about himself, or Dye loved his Jack. I think we finally have that guy.
