BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive says college athletics are "going through a historic evolution."

Slive released a statement Monday after a judge's ruling that players in FBS football and Division I men's basketball are entitled to at least $5,000 a year for rights to their names, images and likenesses. He says the judge on Friday appropriately recognized "the importance of integrating academics and athletics in this decision."

The NCAA says it will appeal U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken's ruling against the NCAA's argument that its model of amateurism is the only way to operate college sports.

Slive says "the ultimate consequences" won't be known until legal questions are resolved. He says the judge's decision and recent changes in NCAA governances represent "a historic evolution of the landscape of college sports."

They have done a college baseball game too, why don't they get any money. They don't even get a full scholarship.

The NCAA is gonna lose all the appeals, it's just formality.

What you're probably gonna see is a trust fund setup for players where they get a chunk of money after they graduate, which is a good thing.

I have to admit there is a part of me that wants all the players to get paid on the same day every year on a Friday after the season. The Twittersphere of all of those guys gettin' paid and going out to celebrate would be epic.

Paid in ones with $100 bill ends to the stacks. If they spread the bills correctly twitter would be on overtime.

Big 5 will push for full funding of baseball and softball, although only the SEC will probably be able to afford it.

I agree. Pay them what they're worth and make them pay for everything their scholarship covers. All but about 1% of the NCAA athletes will be begging for the old/current system.

So lemme get this right.

You're wanting to pay 17-22 year old athletes what, $100k a year salary, before taxes, then trust them to pay their bills with said salary?

What happens when they use the money on hooers, rides and ganja?

Slive can put any spin he wants to on it but nothing about this is for the players. Those lawsuits aren't for the players nor is the autonomy movement for the players. As usual, it's all about the benjamins.

What I worry about with autonomy is that this will ruin the rest of CFB and destroy college basketball. I like the fact that come tourney time we'll see tiny colleges in Basketball show up. I like the fact that every now and the a no name school can upset one of the big boys in football or even have a sweetheart season. However, autonomy is motivated by recruiting and we will start squeezing the little guys out of the game.

So yes, it's historic and ultimately we don't know where it will lead. Maybe it will turn out ok but no one's "in it for the children," regardless of what side of the debate they're on.

I couldn't agree more. And I love the fact that June Jones threw out a trial balloon for the have-not's to play their football in the spring.

The arrogance of the Big 5 is bullshite. It's against the spirit of "amatuer" athletics.

If they really want to cover their asses from lawsuits over college players monetizing themselves and their likenesses, let them come up with another way. It can be done. But destroying the current, long-standing system isn't the way.

What they are doing they HAVE TO do. They tried to get a lower ($2k) amount through the NCAA as it was and the small programs shot it down.

The NCAA brought this on themselves.

Even if it kills March Madness?

Or the Big 5 want to play each other in football only?

I'm sure these same judges who are strong proponents of letting the free market determine the compensation college athletes receive will have no issue upholding Title IX, which guarantees female athletes the same compensation as men despite the fact that 95% of them produce negative revenues for the school. Hypocrisy at its finest. The judges are forcing colleges to pay revenue producing athletes while also saying that Title IX can't be used as a defense.

The Obannon ruling is going to end collegiate scholarships altogether at many schools and will end up hurting more students than it helps. There will be thousands who will wish they could get any form of a scholarship rather than no scholarship. The Obannon ruling and more to come will have the same effect big unions have on industry. Many athletic programs will just shut down rather to try to work within a model it can't afford.

The reason the NCAA was so willing to cave was because of the cash cow known as March Madness.

Bowl season still doesn't compare to March Madness in terms of revenue ... and it never will until college football adopts an NFL type playoff system.
