What happened in Houston between the Oilers leaving and the Texans debuting?

I know this may be OTish but I've been meaning to ask about this.
With the Oilers moving to TN in in 1997 and the Texans not being founded until 2002 how did the Houston react?
Did some continue to follow the Oilers / Titans? Did others just gravitate towards Dallas or somewhere else?
When the Texans were created did everyone that was once an Oilers fan immediately adopt the Texans as their own or was the 5-6 year gap too much time for their fans to gravitate towards other teams?
eta: With all the Gamecocks on the roster and their games just being easier to find here than in Cola, SC I imagine I'll be following them more so this year.

Some became Cowboys fans, some followed the Titans, and I think most just followed the NFL without a rooting interest. Also frick the Titans

I'm from the SA area, but my impression is that the fandom slowly grew back. For me the Oilers were a close 1b to the cowboys but it took a bit for me to embrace the Texans again.
The cowboys perpetual suck helped too.
I wish that SOB Bud Adams would sell the oiler name back. Tennessee and oil makes as much sense as the Utah Jazz or LA Lakers.

I always get thrown into a fit of rage when they wear the Oilers throwbacks. It's a crime that the name, logo and unis got taken from the city of Houston. frick Bud Adams

Speaking of which I know there are few things as frustrating in football as an awful secondary. How you duel Aggie / Texans fans dealt with that last year and may have to do the same this year is beyond me. My condolences.

Being an A&M/Houston sports fan is a cold, unforgiving fan existence

That's why I'm not a Houston sports fan.

This. I personally just dove in more to college football and stopped giving a shite about the NFL. I did sorta root for the Cowboys when Ray Childress was there.
As far as the Texans go, most people were just glad to have football back. And local gangs were happy to have a new logo to sport.

Ding. Ding. Ding.
Any moron that supports the NFL in Houston after what they did to us in the 90s is just that; a moron.
Besides, it seems that the only people who follow Houston sports around here are thugs, cholos, and Pasadena whiskey tangos. Watching local TV interviews of "fans" after Texans games is gold comedy....no, seriosuly. Gold. So many gold mouth grills being sported along with hood rat ink of "their" team.

Their logo really is perfect for that Houstone gang or whatever. Prolly why they picked it.

Here is a sneek peak of the local fanbase. Its "mi gente" against WestCoastAg's "gente". Buen provecho.

The parking lot rumble with fans of Los Caballeros was way better.
There are plenty of middle and upper fans too, but you don't see them in jerseys jumping in front of TV cameras.

I don't see how it's Bob McNair or Roger Goodell's fault that the Oilers left. My ties to the Texans aren't in the same stratosphere as A&M football, and I would trade 30 Texans Super Bowl wins for one A&M NC, but I support them because they represent the city I live in and grew up in.
And there are plenty of normal Texans fans, this thug problem you're talking about isn't any different than the problems a lot of pro football teams have. The Cowboys have a similar problem but it's amplified x10 because the fanbase is larger

You mean "Los Vaqueros"? Oh yeah, those idiots are worse. I spent half a year in Puro Pinche San Anto once. These frickers are on their own league as far as trashyness. All of San Anto is cowboys country.

Look, I understand that the league is a business and they do whats in the best interest of the league.
But when they use tax payer money to build their fancy stadiums, then they should be held to a bit more responsibility for the city they pretend to represent. Instead we see them holding communities hostage. We are about to see an example of this when the Oakland Raiders use San Antonio as a leverage to get themselves a new stadium with suites either in Oakland, LA, or SA.
What Bud Adams and the NFL did to Houston is something no Houstonian should ever forget. Thats why I say frick the NFL. The only respectable owners/teams are those who dont use public fundings (Patriots, Jets, Giants, and Panthers)
