The Bulldogs list five players for two starting spots at safety in its preseason depth chart. Market and Jay Hughes are both listed as the starter at strong safety with Kivon Coman at backup. Justin Cox and Deontay Evans are battling for the starting spot at free safety.

Market joins Benardrick McKinney as the only two players returning who had more tackles last year than Whitley. Market slipped into the starting lineup after Hughes tore his Achilles tendon in last year’s season-opener. Cox played 13 games last year but didn’t move to safety — his position in junior college — until the Liberty Bowl. Coman and Evans each recorded less than 20 tackles last season but had two of the best springs of any Bulldog.

No player received more “Psycho Defense” or “Get the Ball” awards this spring than Cox. Coman and Evans were right behind him.
