My favorite in college football. Stumbled across this video from 1987. Cool stuff!

I like the "Black Death" flags too.

Ahhhhh, the Joe Morrison days when it all started, the Man in Black, Black Death Defense and Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

The phrase was coined by Joe Mo, "If it ain't swayin' we ain't playin'," meaning the East Upper Deck would sway so much in the craziness that there were fears it would collapse ... sway back and forth to the tune of five to six feet and more it was estimated.

Earthquake engineers had to come in and add buffers and shock absorbers to quell fears of collapse.

Edited to add the following newspaper clipping:

Stadium Ok'd for swaying.

I love theirs and VT's Enter sandman. There is something nice about keeping it consistent. It allows your fans to get use to something, and really make it their own.

Definitely one of the best intros. I knew we were fricked after I heard that and Sandstorm prior to kickoff a few years ago. Our pregame seemed so tame. Definitely underrated as people don't even consider it up there with Michigans/Tennessees/Clemsons

Got to go to the VT/GT game in 2012 and I was so disappointed. The stadium is not nearly as loud and the intro was way shorter than I thought it would be...you could not hear the music well at all.

there's something about music that just builds up to the players running out that makes it so much more hype

that's why I don't think clemson's is that great. yeah they run down the hill, but there's no buildup to it with energetic music. they just stand up there and run out randomly so there's no huge buildup to it

Really? That sucks. Maybe they have sound system issues like we do

Fire Ant Defense and Black Death, those were good years.

Gamecocks won ... it was a slugfest, now known as the "Rodney" game.

Sterling Sharpe, Brad Edwards, Harold Green, et al, that '87 team was our best team for decades, talent wise. I think 14 off that team ended-up playing in the NFL with quite a few of them Pro Bowlers.

Agreed. A good hype song understands how to rise to a climax (giggle).

I think Clemson's is lame as hell. Totally unexciting.

yeah my first game there in 2010 really was underwhelming. the entrance was so much less than what I had always heard about it

in 2012 I was actually lower bowl and it was a top 15 matchup, so I figured it would be much louder and more intense. it wasn't

I'm spoiled by ours in that the song 2001 provides for a definite point of when the flags go up and the team runs out.

Been to a few other venues and without that definite point I had gotten so used to I sometimes missed the home team's entrance because I was too busy looking at our guys gathering around the away entrance. UTs comes to mind. The T itself is cool enough but it just seems to kind of happen.

eta: For those interested here is a short history of it.

As you can see our band used to extend all the way across the field and into the sideline, they've long since had to reform because I guess it cuts the other team off from entering.

Of course now as mentioned by Tween our band plays the fight song right after 2001 and right after that Sandstorm kicks up, that stadium is rocking for a while.

Saw this Aggie one this morning. I thought it was pretty cool. Not the best camera angle, I'll try to find a better one.
