The bears of Steep Creek

Steep Creek in JNU is one of the few places where during a specific time of year (Aug - mid Sept) you can see bears doing bear things almost on demand. Other areas are Brooks Falls, Pack Creek, Sweetheart Creek or Anan creek but those areas are difficult to reach. Steep Creek is accessible by auto and short walk. It has a walkway built across the creek where you can watch black bears fishing for their meals and literally get within a few feet of them. I found these guys this morning, sow and cub.

In that first video I would have started swimming away. There's no way I could stay calm seeing that big of a bear so close.

If you move quickly, they'll jump you. Poor eyesight and a protective instinct, they will at least check you out if you start moving rapidly. Two ways to protect yourself are either make yourself look as big as possible, and wave your hands, or remain very still and silent. Rapid retreat will cause them to react.

Seriously, those are neat shots. I'd love to see one of Alabama's few black bears in the wild.
