Today was the first time I've heard him speak. And I thought "No way is that kid from Texas or Oklahoma or anywhere in the South. Probably California or Illinois or Ohio." So I looked it up. Nope! Brother Martin HS in New Orleans, which is even weirder than if he'd been from Austin/S.A./Dallas/Houston. Apologies in advance to T-Bird (I guess?) but this interview threw me for a loop. NOT a football player of any color's voice. Refreshing.

Heard him interviewed when he was a freshman. You could easily tell that this is a young man who has his shite completely together. If he's healthy, he's gonna have a great year.

Well, thanks for rescuing me. I had to have a few drinks before clicking Submit, and even then I knew it would come across wrong and it might still. But that guy had me all "What the hell? This is a football player?". He comes across as a very intelligent young man, which was a pleasure to witness.

Oh, no need for that at all! I've remarked similarly on Obioha's diction in the past--he's always been a solid interviewee.

I actually have a speech cadence close to his. Here's an interview I did last year for some random college kid's fledgling radio program during the ill-fated 2013 NBA Finals. Hopefully the link still works, but my segment is from 13:10-22:00.

Very encouraging to hear players like Obioha speak. The so-called "thugs" tend to attract more attention on the recruiting trail and in the forever-slanted-against-A&M court of public Rant opinion, but guys like him are the steadying influences that tend to help a team far more than most casual fans can realize or appreciate.

Here's to you, Mr. Obioha!

I went to Brother Martin as well. Private Catholic boys school. Very tough. Still not sure how I made it out.

Nicely done (for anybody interested, T-Bird starts at ~13:19), but I wasn't thinking about black folks in general at all. More about black football players. But that's kinda racist, as many white football players bother me, too. (Swope and Neely are two of my favorites and they consistently sound like they're stoned, for example.) I understand it is at least partially a cultural thing, but many black football players make me cringe every time they speak. Obioha to me sounds like an engineer or law student. Or, like you, an Air Force cadet.

One of my bike-racing buddies (who is still going at it long after I quit) went there, and that was why the name stuck out to me. They must be doing something right. Here's a good story about my guy: LINK To me he's a legitimate hero. Glad to know him.

That's a great point

I don't think it's racist at all. More of a jock culture thing. And of course more black folks are involved in the current sports climate. So many athletes get by on their sports exploits while their spoken representation gets less attention than it should (which is a disservice to the athlete, IMO, but unfortunately it is what it is).

By the way I didn't mean to gloss over this. My bike-racing teammate does not think highly of nuns, for reasons you probably understand much better than me . His stories sounded a lot like they came straight from The Blues Brothers. But I'm guessing they also did a lot of things right.

Actually, seeing some of the interviews with both he and Jonathan Stewart and some of the "ask the Aggies" segments, they strike me as the stereotypical "nerd" in terms of personality.

I somehow forgot about Jonathan Stewart, who was definitely well-spoken (a nerd, in CGSC Lobotomy-speak). He was another good 'un. Stewart and Obioha are to me a breath of fresh air. But then, I'm as nerdy as they come.

It's not just the way they sound, it's the way they answer. It's almost...awkward.

I love that country twang

I have a very thick Texas accent and people from out of state regularly comment on how strange it is to hear a very articulate person with such a noticeable accent.
