A nice friday political discussion thread. Will America do the correct thing and change the drinking age to 18 or even lower? I say no.

It is silliness to have the drinking age set at 21, but I doubt it changes. The reason bringing the 18-20 faction is the weakest political faction in the U.S. They generally have no money and no pull. Also once they turn 21 most stop caring if the drinking age is 21. Their votes are pretty meaningless so no one will truly try to help them. The right claiming to like small gov, wont back them because of the religious whackos that love small gov except when it comes to liberty. The left who loves to champion social issues wont back them. Even most libertarians don't give much of a thought to it other than it being a footnote on why gov should be scaled back.

The last states to hold out on changing the age had a gun held to them until they did so.

and for sleeping tiger, the mole people don't care about the issue being overturned because it doesn't fit into their plot for world domination.

Agreed it should be 18. In fact I don't think there should be an age at all. Let the parents enforce it. Not the govt.

id be fine with no age at all and let parents decide when their kids can have it. The american attitude towards alcohol is laughable for a first world country.

It's extremely stupid. They should lower the drinking age and raise the minimum driving age for states to at least 17 IMO. MIPs are so incredibly stupid when you're in college, virtually all of my friends got them and they weren't taken seriously, but still a pain in the arse at the end of the day.

My parents let me drink openly once I turned 18 as long as I didn't drive and called them for rides from parties, etc if I needed one when I was in HS or home from school on Christmas break. Most of my friends parents were the same way. Nobody takes it seriously

no, I'm only 27

FWIW much like drug laws i don't believe there should be any federal law on drinking age. It should be an issue for states.

This is really another issue that belongs at the state level and with many different options instead of one answer from the out of control fed gov.

I agree, though I'm sure every SEC state except LA and MO would probably keep it at 21. shite some might raise it

Agree.

Only faster vote would be for a legislative pay raise.

Didn't they hold out until like 95 from the highway funding but eventually had to give in? fricking awesome.

The other petty shite laws that most states have (but LA doesn't) like liquor stores being closed on Sundays, not selling last 9 pm etc are ridiculous as well. The laws in TX piss me off and we aren't anywhere near the worst. Everyone knows MS are crazy. Pennsylvania's liquor laws are out of control, I was there for work and you have to buy beer at state run beer shops and liquor at separate state run liquor stores. Such a clusterfrick

Yea, we held out as long as possible until the fed did fed things and tied something that is completely unrelated in the matter to force us to give in. We still defied them somewhat with a few loop holes and things such as being able to drink when you are 18 if you are with a relative that is 21 or over

I hope not. I don't want any 18yos at my favorite drinking establishments. Let them drink bud light in their apartments and basements until they learn how to behave drunk in public.

I grew-up in an age when we had drive through "Party Packs" and you could buy beer at the age of 16 if you had even the slightest hint of a mustache ... you could get in titty bars if you had a mustache back then too.

There was a pack of us, we all developed early with the mustaches, and we would drive across the border into Augusta (known around here as Disgusta, to the titty bars ... after going through the drive-through party packs for the beer.

I remember distinctively when Coors was finally allowed east of the Mississippi ... some time after Smokey and the Bandit I think it was, and we all thought Coors had magical powers to give you a peyote high. That was the rumor back then, it was brewed with peyote.

Kids

The only 18 years olds that should be able to drink legally are soldiers ... on post.

Living in Europe for some time, marrying an Italian (2nd wife), I can tell you that Europeans look at it differently. Southern Europeans, considered the Mexican class of Europe (I'm talking Spain, Italy, Greece and Portugal) all raise their kids learning to drink responsibly from an early age. It is not uncommon to see ten year olds having a little wine/water mix at dinner from time to time ... or babies being given wine by dipping a little finger in the adult's wine glass and all them to drink drops of the fingers.

Northern Europeans .... from Austria, Switzerland, Germany and up including the UK, are beer drinkers and are a little more like Americans in that regard. Chugging is the way of the land.

When you allow 18 year olds to legally drink, (because, let's face it, they are drinking already anyway), you risk going-back to the bad old days of a lot more DUIs and a lot more really bad wrecks. That's just the way it was.

And then there is insurance. If the drinking age is lowered back to 18, insurance rates, even for the non-drinkers, below the age of 21 is going to go through the roof and become un-affordable for some.

Allow it, but only for soldiers, military personnel, on post.

If your old enough to serve in the armed forces and vote you should be able to have a fricking drink. Military raised it to 21 when I was in but turned a blind eye most of the time. Soldiers not having beer in Iraq and Afghanistan also bullshite.

Oklahoma has some dumbass liquor laws, like only 3.2 beer can be sold cold.

why not let the states decide what is proper on a social issue?

also those that choose safety over liberty deserve neither.
