@bmarcello: RT @TWalkerRivals: SOURCES: Kentucky expected to hire Tony Barbee in an administrative role, likely Rod Strickland's old position.

I was really surprised Cal didn't hire him in the assistant spot that opened up when Antigua left for USF. I figured this was probably a foregone conclusion once he was fired from Auburn.

Why would UK hire him in any capacity?

Because he was always a pretty good assistant for Cal at Memphis and played for him at UMass?

You didn't think he recruited well at Memphis from 2000-2006?

No way Cal was hiring Barbee for a recruiting position….it was Slice's all along.
The gig Barbee just got is not that important…he is not allowed on the floor during practices according the NCAA regulations.

Then you could've fooled half of the media and then some.

Obviously. It's laughable that anyone thinks hiring a former HC in that position is shite though.

Barbee is probably a good assistant who should stay an assistant in some capacity.

He was a complete disaster at Auburn, as the HEAD man.
Cal needs no "Recruiting" help. HE is the draw to UK himself.

His HC ability sure left a lot to be desired.

What? Slice was getting the position that Coach O left. Slice is known as the best recruiter in the nation. Plus, Slice worked with Cal waaaaaaaay back in the day when they were starting out. Slice has established in roads with top recruits in the New York area (see Johnson).

It is known Cal was putting Barbee in the position until he gets a better gig…keeps him in the game.

Some guys just aren't head coaches. To use an LSU example, Ron Cooper?

Every good coach has a solid staff to back him. Is he the biggest draw as a HC? Sure. But an assistant can very well close the deal on a kid. As said, Barbee is in an advisory position right now but given that schools have been shopping guys like Kenny Payne he's not a bad ace to have in the hole.

I don't disagree with this, but Auburn is no place for an up and coming coach to try to turn around a program. Will be interesting to see what Pearl is able to do there as a coach who has had some success elsewhere.

Oh, on a side note…rumor going around…Jaylen Rose was considering the gig that Barbee just landed.
