Buying a color TV for maw-maw to put up on her wall. Gotta have a bigger TV for games when we're there.

I was planning to pick up a 120hz Samsung in a 50"-60" range. Was told by a salesperson at BestBuy to get the Sharp, because it's comparable and much cheaper.

Opinions on the Sharps?

might try the tech board.

unless you want to keep it to SEC specific. I'd say if this is maw-maw, getting the Sharp over the Samsung is a no brainer. i've got vizios for all of my in-laws to save them on costs and they've all been incredibly happy about them.

sharp isn't a slouch brand.

I've had both brands recently and both are good. I prefer samsung but I have no real complaints about the sharp.

The Samsung was substantially more expensive than the sharp but no huge difference in picture. The samsung just did more shite that I rarely used.

If you're wanting to go value and performance, although it's a dying breed I would go plasma. Hell, you can get a 50" LG for $400 if you look hard enough. As long as she doesn't have huge windows in the living room (a lot of them don't have the matte finish that LCDs have and so they can catch some glare at times) then that's what I would pick.

I have a 55" Panasonic Plasma and although it was cheaper than a lot of LCDs in that size from Samsung/LG/Sony/Sharp it blows the picture of all of them out of the water. Plus a lot of the plasmas don't have all the smart TV BS that would do nothing but confuse an older person.

Plasmas are going out of style, but basically because their marketing people stink, not because they're a superior picture at a cheaper pricepoint.

not the greatest, but for your needs get the cheapest name brand model for your size and call it a day

Best Buy had a 50" Samsung plasma for $400 last weekend, but it was a 720p. I've heard the average viewer can't tell the difference between a 720p and a 1080p, but I've never compared. The guy there said the Samsung plasmas were pretty much the only ones they were still getting in inventory.

I'd tend to agree. For a 50" plasma, I think you'd be OK at 720p and likely couldn't tell much difference. Any bigger than that and I would probably head toward a 1080p, but even then your picture is only as good as your source, and most satellite is compressed enough anyway that there's really probably not much difference. Also depends on how close you sit to the TV. For football and something with fast-moving items on the picture like auto racing, hockey (basically any sports) plasmas will look smoother than most LCDs because of the ultra-high refresh rate.

depends on the content, size and distance, as well as your vision

Samsung didnt produce any 2014 models, LG is the sole remaining plasma name brand

Interesting. I guess these were the remaining Samsungs they were trying to liquidate. Kinda wish I had bought one. For $400, not much to lose.

I do remember him saying they had a couple of LG's.

somewhat. They didnt come out with a 2014 model, but were still producing them. They are phasing out the production plants. I can still get a new one from Samsungs main distributor in the US, but selection and availability is highly limited
