Oftentimes on this board the term “sidewalker” is used in a derogatory way (typically referring to a different breed of Alabama fans)… Would you classify a sidewalker as any fan who did not attend the University? Or is the term used to describe those who don’t know their heads from their arses and embarrass the general fan base?

What if the fan grew up in the area or had family attend the University?

I’m new here…

A sidewalker is someone who never attended the University and only becomes a fan when the team is doing well. It's a special form of bandwagoner.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. We're all sidewalkers when we're kids.

Just fans that didn't attend the university. They're an important part of any program, but they're definitely beneath us true fans.

To me a sidewalk fan is someone who didnt attend the university but is still a fan for any number of reasons. Not necessarily derogatory.

Many of those however are the lower income ignorant redneck variety also known as Gumps.

I think it's generally used as a derogatory term because the people that are very obnoxious are often people that never graduated from the university. If you want to root for them and never went/graduated, I don't care.

It's important to note that a sidewalk fan can ascend the fandom cast without attending the school by becoming a bagman.

So to you Jed, the only way to be a true fan is to attend the University?

Harvey Updyke was a "true fan" in every sense of the word, but he committed a felony in the name of Bama among other things. I realize he's a very rare occasion, but saying that is stupid.

Also, as previously posted, it's not the only way, you can also become a bagman.

So many terms for fans: sidewalker, t-shirt, bandwagon, fair weather, etc.

Comes down to this:

"Do you have a legitimate tie to the university?"

Legitimate ties: alum, once attended, sent kids there, SO went there, season ticket holder with large donation, connected to faculty, family name is on a building on campus, etc.

Not legitimate ties: you like them because you live in the same state, you bought a shirt/hat of theirs once and liked the color, they turned down your application, etc.

"If you don't have legitimate ties, do you embarrass those who do have legitimate ties by being shitty to fellow fans or opposing fans?"

Basically if you don't have a real claim to represent the program or university keep your mouth shut and your balls in your pants.

The worst sidewalkers have no appreciation at all for the University itself. Usually if they lose to the football team, they say things like "I wish that whole school would burn to the ground." They are oblivious to the fact that there are kids who are working their butts off for an education there year round. But this does not apply to all sidewalkers.

I can definitely understand your thought. If the fan never attended the University, how could they be a ‘true fan’, not having a direct tie with the team?

How about a fan that was brought up following a particular team but when it came to deciding on a college to attend, he recognized State Universities were not the best route (I assume you saw the Forbes post).

Further, would that mean there are not any true fans in professional sports (or very few)?
