My altercation with a crackhead today

I went to the gas station to get my 25 cent Roo cup refill. I jumped in my car to leave. As I started to pull out this woman started waving her arms at me. I rolled down the window to see what she wanted. She told me her car ran out of gas down the street, and if I had any money to spare.
I told her I didn't have any money to spare. She then cussed at me repeatedly, and used some racial slurs.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a couple of twenty dollar bills. I flashed them in her face "Johnny Manziel" style while I drove off. I normally give people a few dollars, but I had no desire to give her a $20. I was feeling cheap today, and only wanted to spend 25 cents.
What would you have done?

I would have told her the truth, that I have no cash on me (I rarely have cash on me). I get approached by those types of people a few times a year, and it always makes me uncomfortable.

Here's the deal. If her response when you told her you didn't have any cash to spare was to curse you out, then she is a POS and doesn't deserve to be helped.
I don't care if you have 100 bucks in your wallet, its up to you if you have "any cash to spare".

FWIW, my Mom had her purse stolen in a grocery parking lot a few years ago by a meth head that approached the car asking her to let her use her cellphone because her "boyfriend" was trying to beat the shite out of her. My Mom hadn't locked the doors yet because she had just loaded the car and the girl yanked open the passenger door and stole her purse right out of the seat before she could tell her No.
She then proceeded to use my Mom's ID to cash checks at several liquor stores, telling them that the reason she looked so different from the ID was because she had cancer. And of course they let her cash them. Luckily a BB&T bank teller signaled for security when she tried to cash my Mom's paycheck with the same excuse.
She paid back several hundred dollars in restitution. Unfortunately my Mom lost some personal stuff she kept in her wallet like her Elvis ticket stubs from the 70s, a handwritten note from her Father who had passed away just a few years before that, and some pictures with no digital copies.
So I'm extra cautious about stuff like that. Usually I won't stop or roll my window down for anything like that.

I almost never give money to panhandlers. I used to, until I lived in a large downtown area for nearly two years. After that, I realized that services were nearby and that giving out $ didn't solve anything. Its more about feeling good in the moment, and tourists got suckered non-stop.
I donate to charities and churches. I rarely hand out money to people on the street. It really depends on the particular moment and the approach. I was riding in a snowstorm with some friends and a guy who smelled like booze approached my truck. He asked for a ride to the other side of town (where we just so happened to be going). I said no, my friends called me heartless. They didn't know this same guy had pulled this same thing on me 6 months earlier. I finally said ok, he can get in the very back (truck bed). Sure enough, after we took him three miles, he kept badgering me to take him further, cussing, etc. At this point, the bleeding heart friends who insisted I pick him up were uncomfortable, thinking "this guy's going to rob us, etc". Dude probably doesn't have a car or license due to being a hopeless drunk, and was using us for rides from drinking and going home. In short, we helped him "in the moment" but didn't do him any favors long term.

I used to give a dollar here and there to panhandlers, but then I moved to Atlanta and there are so many here (depending on where you are you could be asked every five minutes if you're walking around) that I've just stopped all together. Except the other day, there was a sweet polite old lady, I just couldn't help it.

The right answer.
I've given cash to dummies who've run out of gas and want to get home. It may be a routine thing with them - travelling long distance and trusting God to take care of them. Don't know, don't care. If one of them starting cussing me for not giving them money, though, I think I'd erupt.
OP did just fine in my book.

I don't give homeless people money, but I will offer to buy them food if its outside a food joint/grocery store/gas station. More often than not they just walk off and start asking other people, but some are grateful and take me up on it.

Yes, and I've been that dummy before. Not needing cash, but needing a ride to the gas station. It happened to me just north of McKinney once, during rush hour, where I kept telling myself "I'll get north of all the traffic and then get gas", then a good song comes on or someone called me and I forgot until it was too late.
In that instance, the third person who passed me stopped and helped. My helping another person would depend on their gender, appearance, and whether they had a family with them.
I probably wouldn't stop for a thugged out single 20-something dude in a hoopty (race irrelevant), but I'd never go past a family with kids (race also irrelevant).

That's an important qualifier I didn't think to mention. In all cases with me the dummie had kids in tow. No matter how irresponsible he is, those kids don't deserve to sit helpless in the heat, whether it is daddy's fault or not.
