Or do they?

Here is a look at the list of teams Vanderbilt has played at least 10 times and currently has a winning overall record against. It's pretty slim, but Coach Franklin really did a fantastic job of building that program. I'd like to think their recent Baseball success could help as well.

Auburn
Centre (KY)
Duke
Maryland
Memphis
Middle Tennessee State
Sewanee
Tennessee Tech
Tennessee-Chattanooga
Virginia
Wake Forest

Four ACC teams on that list. FSU should be fearful of the new playoff format.

Oh, and at Auburn.

Bunch of patsies. You've gotta be pretty awful to have played Vandy that many times and have a losing record against them. It's worse that there are so many from one league on that list. ACC has been shite for pretty much ever.

I see more applications to the school. Good job football and baseball team for the PR. If the basketball team made the final 4, they really would get a spike. This is winning for Vanderbilt.

I still remember the first time I saw someone say a dreaded curse word on national TV --- 1969 Vandy Bammer game when Bear said something like "what the shite is going on here?" it was obvious nobody had the answer as Vandy anchored down Bear's arse as did UT a week later.

It is so fun to go way back & look at win-loss records!!!

Personally Im glad Franklin is gone from Vandy -- snake oil salesman. My son went there and I believe Mason is a more solid coach

Since you brought it up... We don't have to go too far. Auburn is on a 2 game skid against Vandy.

No doubt. Vandy has been on a roll lately. Hopefully they can keep it up. I honestly don't know what to think about their new football coach... Haven't heard much from him outside of the normal SEC media appearances.

Coach Mason is a low key kinda dude in public. He's said a few things that I thought were naive (like the PAC being better top to bottom than the SEC) but he's used to that line too. IMO, he's still learning the ropes of being an HC, especially when it comes to being a public face. Players DO appear to like him and respond to his coaching. Mind you most of this is coming from what I've seen since he arrived and state-wide media so I could be off.

BUT I can honestly say I like the guy so far and FWIW I couldn't stand Franklin from the get go (came across as pure arrogant slime and an a-hole supreme and backed that impression up every step of the way - crazy comments and twitter rampages that were just embarrassing).

That said, other than whipping on OOC opponents and SEC rivals I'm not terribly keen on Vanderbilt becoming a juggernaut. Even though I don't think that's a legit issue it would obviously have a few repercussions for UT if they somehow became a real threat, particularly with regard to in-state recruiting and talent is really booming across the state these days.

I wish them well just not too well.

I like Mason as well, although I wonder how well they'll transition to a 3-4 (which is pretty much like the 9ers D).

I think they step back recordwise this year, but I do think they'll be fine as a program down the road.

That can be a difficult transition for any team. Especially one lacking in overall talent and trying to compete in the SEC.

It'll be interesting for sure.

This. Do they even make men that are both big enough to play a 3-4 nose and bright enough to qualify at Vandy?

I know the Bama guys will take this in the wrong direction but would love to see Coach Saban at Vanderbilt to see if he could take the Commodores all the way

I don't think the transition to the 3-4 will go well this year - it usually doesn't (even pro teams tend to struggle with switching). That said, Vandy has lost so much production on offense and so many upperclassmen that they were likely going to take a step back this year anyway. So it may be a - 'what the hell do we have to lose?' situation.

But everything indicates Mason is a solid defensive mind. He'll have other things to work out but I don't doubt that when he gets the 3-4 rolling they'll do well on defense. A lot of people may not know this but Vandy has actually had some killer defenses in the past - it's just that they never had much overall success until recently.

Beyond defense I really don't know how he'll handle the other aspects of coaching.

No, I think that would be a very interesting thing to watch. If he could recruit, he could win. I tend to believe he'd find some way to get the recruits there.

Think Vandy made a perfect hire. Overall, I think he's better for Vandy than Franklin was. However, with that said, I just don't think it's feasible for them to sustain success over the long term. They have the same hurdles a school like Standford does but not the support from the administration like Standford.
