Great pic. Like my grandfather, it's difficult to think of John Wayne as having been young.

Yeah, he was. That's the very first pic of a young John Wayne I've ever seen. Kind of reminds me of Andy Gibb.

Why? Because of crowds?

My grandfather came home sooner because he was injured (Purple Heart for Okinawa), but that picture is full of so much optimism, relief, and happiness, IMO.
