I stumbled across the 2012 U.S News and World Report Rankings for each school and then compared them with their 2013 USNWR Rankings. Here is the biggest improvements and gains among SEC schools in recent rankings.

As a whole it looks like the SEC is on the rise!!!

Pluses indicate how much their ranking improved from the previous year.

1. Mississippi State #142 (+18)
2. Alabama #77 (+9)
3. Arkansas #128 (+6)
4. Kentucky #119 (+6)
5. Florida #49 (+5)
6. Georgia #60 (+3)
7. South Carolina #112 (+3)
8. Ole Miss #150 (+1)
9. Missouri #97 (No Change)
10. Tennessee #101 (No Change)
11. Vanderbilt #17 (No Change)
12. LSU #135 (-1)
13. Auburn #91 (-2)
14. Texas A&M #69 (-4)

As a whole for 2013, the SEC climbed 44 slots in the rankings. We're getting there. ;)

I know from the Central Mississippi Alumni Association's MSU Extravaganza recently held in Jackson that this last year State had it's highest avg ACT score ever among incoming freshman(28), our highest average ACT entering honors college(31) and our first Rhodes Scholar. We also have more research funding coming into State than all other schools in Mississippi combined.

According to this, Miss. State has 25% Of it's current students receiving a 20 on their ACT and a 28 would put you in the 75th percentile.

LINK

The average would probably hover around a 28 for Florida and Georgia...

Either way, MSU is a great school. Every SEC school is and the conference is really improving in recent years. Lots of improvement while other conferences struggle to keep their in-state students from coming down here to enjoy the atmosphere.

It's the perfect combination between academics and having a good time. Whereas other conferences can't match our sports, weather, greek scene, or girls. It might sound trivial to bring these things up, but the bottom line is that these are all major attractions when you're talking about 18-19 year old students.

SEC Schools are just more socially appealing and the more applicants try to come down here the more the SEC is going to benefit in the rankings by being given the luxury to be more selective and/or expand in size.

USnews is not accurate.. LSU, UGA, A&M, and Kentucky all have improved their research profiles tremendously in recent years. The problem is that Usnews under-ranks large public universities by taking into account peer reviews, endowment per students, and other useless factors. Usnews is more indicative of "prestige" of a school than academics.

You can only improve if you're Mississippi State. Easy to see why it is number 1.

The fact that you care so much about this is obnoxious.

The biggest problem is peer reviews.

That's why all the UC satellite campuses (UC Davis, UC Irvine, etc.) are all so overrated, because they all review each other as if they're all Berkely.
