... what did he mean?

LINK

quote:

Former Missouri linebacker, SEC Defensive Player of the Year and openly gay human being Michael Sam was eventually drafted by the Rams, though it wasn't until the seventh round when St. Louis made history.

Had Super Bowl-winning coach, NBC analyst and noted conservative Tony Dungy been running the Rams, he "wouldn't have taken" Sam. Why? "Things will happen" apparently.

"I wouldn’t have taken him,’’ Dungy told the Tampa Bay Tribune. “Not because I don’t believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it.

"It’s not going to be totally smooth ... things will happen."

Media will destroy Dungy for saying this but they will bloat up the Sam situation anyway.

Its a story if Sam plays. Its a story if he doesn't. His team gets fricked either way.

Fwiw, I don't have a problem with what Dungy said.

If that Oprah crap would have gone through, who knows what kind of clown show would be going on. With that said, this isn't new, tons of NFL teams pass on free agents and draft picks because of a variety of issues. Having the first publicly gay guy on your team brings a lot of attention.

I agree with him. If it just so happens a rookie 7th round pick isn't good enough to see the field, there's going to be a circus.

Mike and Mike were freaking out about this all morning. Sounds to me like he is just saying he wouldn't want to deal with the distraction Sam would cause for a 7th Rounder that may or may not even make the team. I'm sure everyone will just say he hates gays though and will want to burn him in effigy.

He meant too much PC exists today.

That they are as self-righteous, if not moreso, than those they love to accuse of being.

Basically, he was call them hypocrites.

It's pretty fricked up how some in the media are blasting him, saying that Dungy of all people should be able to empathize with Sam.

Yeah they were trying to equate this to Charlie Ward speaking out against female reporters being allowed in the locker room, because of his religious beliefs.

I'm pretty sure he does though

But hey that's his opinion, I disagree with his beliefs on that but it doesn't affect me either way.

So that's why he didn't get drafted? It wasn't because he was undersized and wouldn't give up basketball?

It won't be much of an issue for Dungy, but Belichick would be crucified had he said it.

Why would anyone want to take on all that shite?? No pun intended...

But seriously, if I were a head coach and having to deal with all of the media and the distractions from dealing with Michael Sam would be a royal pain in the arse... No pun intended...

Why would anyone want to deal with that circus for an, at best, 7th round talent?? SMH

He's getting hammered in the media, and he's already caved and "clarified" his statement.

He's actually getting it worse, because he's black and people think he should empathize more with Sam because of it.

Belichick and the other 31 NFL coaches said it by Sam not being drafted until only a few picks remained.

Who want's that headache?

I agree with him. Nobody wants that kind of media circus for somebody who isn't really a standout talent.

This.

The pressure on the coach to be equal opportunity and politically correct would be more than most NFL coaches want to take on with a 7th round pick.
