Must be a summer thing with me and historical records and comparisons....but I just got curious about our record against teams with similar wins and losses.
Meaning....when we have between 7 and 9 wins for a year, how do we do against other teams that also have between 7 and 9 wins for the year? When we have 10+ wins, how do we do against other teams that have 10+ wins? What about when we're not very good and have between 4-6 wins? How do we do against other teams with 4-6 wins?
*this is major conferences only, so it doesn't include things like a 9 win Auburn team beating a 7 win Southern Miss team. I also chose a 3-win window because if two teams played and one ends the year with 9 wins and the other with 7 wins, all else being the same, it means if their head-to-head game had gone the other way, both would have finished with 8 wins.
Of course, the numbers don't mean too much without some context for comparison...so I also did Alabama, Georgia, and one non-conference power (Ohio State).
All-time when your team has 4-6 wins against other teams with 4-6 wins:
.617 - Alabama (26-15-6)
.591 - Auburn (50-46-1)
.528 - Ohio State (52-46-9)
.466 - Georgia (45-52-5)
All-time when your team has 7-9 wins against other teams with 7-9 wins:
.530 - Alabama (42-37-4)
.521 - Auburn (50-46-1)
.512 - Georgia (42-40-3)
.487 - Ohio State (35-37-3)
All-time when your team has 10+ wins against other teams with 10+ wins:
.655 - Auburn (19-10)
.513 - Ohio State (19-18-2)
.481 - Alabama (25-27)
.286 - Georgia (8-20)
All-time combined records when playing teams with comparable win totals:
.567 - Auburn (112-85-6)
.538 - Alabama (93-79-10)
.511 - Ohio State (106-101-14)
.460 - Georgia (95-112-8)
But win totals mean different things in different eras. There was a time when winning 8 games might mean you were undefeated, 8-0. Or like 2011, winning 8 games might mean you also lost 5 games and were blown out in historic fashion multiple times by your rivals.
So I looked at when Auburn started playing 11 regular season games (12 with a bowl game), and broke down the same comparisons from that time forward. That year was 1973.
Since 1973 when your team has 4-6 wins against other teams with 4-6 wins:
.696 - Auburn (16-7)
.585 - Georgia (24-17)
.500 - Alabama (6-6)
.450 - Ohio State (4-5-1)
Since 1973 when your team has 7-9 wins against other teams with 7-9 wins:
.566 - Auburn (38-29-1)
.530 - Georgia (34-30-2)
.500 - Ohio State (23-23-2)
.432 - Alabama (18-24-2)
Since 1973 when your team has 10+ wins against other teams with 10+ wins:
.630 - Auburn (17-10)
.513 - Ohio State (19-18-2)
.488 - Alabama (21-22)
.259 - Georgia (7-20)
Since 1973 combined records when playing teams with comparable win totals:
.606 - Auburn (71-46-1)
.500 - Ohio State (46-46-5)
.465 - Alabama (45-52-2)
.493 - Georgia (65-67-2)
Notes:
Auburn was the only program to have a winning record in all three groups in both time frames.
Georgia's horrible 8-20 record in 10+ win head to head games includes a 2-9 run since 2006 (although they are 2-1 in their last 3).
Auburn is 7-2 in games with 11+ wins for both teams, including 5-0 in the SEC, never having lost a game in which they and their SEC opponent both end up with 11+ wins (2 wins over Florida, 1993 and 2006, 2 over LSU, 2006 and 2010and 1 over Alabama, 2013).
PS. Looking at the above line just makes me more mad that we blew noon kick-off home games against Arkansas and Georgia in 2006.

It needs a few spaces between sections, but it was still not that hard to read and a pretty interesting bit of trivia/stats.

Took me 30 seconds to get the idea. Auburn has the best record all time when playing team with comparable records. If we are a 9 win team and we play a 9 win team, we gonna win.
