Auburn beat them in the title game and then lsu spanked them a couple months later. Alabama has been the best program overall since Saban returned. So my question is why did everyone want to see that matchup last year if Oregon can't even handle Auburn and LSU?

Alabama can't handle that type of offense.

The answers in life usually come down to sex or money.

They can't handle a big time dual threat qb. Marriotta isn't that special and Stanford and bama run the same scheme with bama having better athletes

I am really interested to see if Bama has improved on playing against teams like Auburn and Oregon. Saban has been recruiting different types of players on defense for two years. Not thay I am an expert but I guess we should start to see if theses smaller, quicker players are the answer.

We handled Auburn better than Alabama did. LSU just owned us. But they also held Alabama down until they had to play the SECcg to have a rematch with Bama.

Bama is a terrible match up for Oregon. You wouldn't need to change a thing to defend Oregon.

Back to the OPs point, ESPN wants the match up because it's sexy and people will watch. You have a lot of stories for the run up - old guard vs. new guard, the guy leading the charge against the HUNH vs the trendsetter of the HUNH, and the shiny new thing vs tradition.

It's not that hard to understand why a tv station wants to make money.

Nike money. That is Nike's top 2 schools at the moment. Plus, Oregon is perceived as the best Pac 12 school. bama is the perceived top program in the SEC. The t.v. ratings would be huge for that game. I would love to see it.

Follow the money and you'll almost always find your answer in sports. I think we've had trouble with teams like Auburn because they A: do the spread fairly well and B: they physically match up with us well.

I think we'd have trashed Oregon even at their best just on a match-up standpoint. I'd still love to watch it!

Last year's team would've got smoked. Oregon needs to get more physical and we weren't on the OL and in the linebacking core. The coaches are going all in to fix this, so it will be interesting to see what it looks like this upcoming year.

Because Oregon has an offense that may actually beat Alabama.

Oregon's trenches are nowhere near as good as Auburn or A&M's.

They have SKILL players certainly up to the challenge. They don't have a big enough line. Period. They wouldn't have enough time to pass the ball. It would really turn out at BEST like the NC Auburn beat them in.

Oregon's DL and OL are pretty damn talented. It's a S&C philosophy that needed changing. Oregon was using all plyometric training and neglected the concentric strength training. They boosted the concentric training this offseason.

However, Buckner and Armstead on the DL both took out insurance policies and were graded 1st or 2nd round at DE and the OL has a ton of individual talent. It's now a matter of pushing more collective weight.

Yep of course except when they can, which they often do.

but you are right, they want to talk up the matchup aspect of it, after all that's what they like to do. "It's PAC 12 speed vs SEC power" blah blah bloviate, they do what they do and it makes them feel important.

Alabama has consistently had problems against teams with that style of offense

2008 - They couldn't hold Tebow down/
2009 - They did, but UF had a bunch of other issues in 09, and was nowhere near as good as 08 UF (which many Bama fans just happen to "forget")
2010 - Cam? LOL.
2011 - No great QBs that they faced really.
2012 - No. Manziel beat them.
2013 - No. They won, but Manziel absolutely destroyed them. And then Auburn beat them. To cap it off, Knight went crazy on that D in teh Sugar Bowl.

So for the majority? Bama has not had success vs that "caliber" of offense.
