Appeals court upholds 10% rule in Texas university admissions.

The University of Collin County at Fayetteville will keep taking them, I guess.

ETA: Please move to OTB. Sorry.

Not SEC Rant material. That is about Texas, we lack their admission policy.

I'm pretty sure LSU's previous chancellor stated it's the best thing to happen to LSU. I've made some great friends from great families that get the shaft from such a silly policy. Here's to many more years of it

I would say all of it is kinda bullshite.

Arkansas benefits from it, though. We get lots of good students from Texas. McKinney is an hour closer to Fayetteville than it is to Lubbock, and that area of DFW happens to be one of the fastest growing areas in Texas. We've started getting a lot of Austin kids, too. We're probably over 20% Texas kids this fall.

Does A&M still do the 25% and 1300/1600 rule? That was how myself and a lot of kids I knew got in

there are a lot of sides to the issue and it really depends on what you think a state university's mission is. That's the crux of it and when you hear people arguing sides, it's usually because they fundamentally disagree with what the mission should be...for example

Arkansas benefits from it, though

From another point of view, I would say Texas is the beneficiary. Texas subsidizes higher education via state schools. The goal of that is to provide a benefit to citizens (taxpayers) and to provide employers (taxpayers) with an educated workforce.

In this case, most of those students go to Arkansas and get a degree and then move back to Texas to work. So Arkansas is essentially bearing the role Texas taxpayers would otherwise be lifting.

Given that they spend money and pay rent for 3-4 years in Fayetteville, pay tuition, etc we at least break even. We are a scholarship lottery state so the state is still funding in-state kids more than out of state. And we don't accept just anybody. We get those kids who are better than lots of the kids who get into Texas schools, but went to "good schools" which were highly competitive.

Many of them do stay. We have a pretty great local economy for a person with a college degree.

Fayetteville has been holding onto more and more after college young people the past several years. Its a cool town and you can find work here.

Depends on the degree.

With some degrees you can/will make more in DFW than NWA, even after cost of living differences are factored int.

I'm not sure what this means. I know Bama and Auburn (and I believe LSU) are offering TX kids in-state tuition so their states are at least subsidizing.

Besides the fact that some may stay (which I agree), there is an ancillary benefit to Arkansas in that it improves the quality of your grads which improves rankings which generates more applications and prestige. It's not all one-sided and I didn't mean to imply that it was, simply that there are more facets to this than simply X then Y.

The scholarship lottery means just about any Arkansas kid who qualifies for admission to Arkansas is going to get between 2500-5000 bucks per semester in automatic assistance from the state. The requirements for receiving the scholarship money are lower than our admission requirements.

Arkansas does the in-state tuition thing for TX kids, too, but only for the top kids. If a kid has a 3.7 and a good ACT/SAT, he can qualify. A kid who has less credentials might still get into school here but will pay out of state.

I've talked to lots of kids who were left looking at Lubbock, and Fayetteville was an easy choice to make.

When I went to the Ole Miss game I was blown away by all the Texas students. If you can not get in TAMU or ut and like fraternal organizations Ole Miss is the winner. Friend of mine from San Diego's kid did not get in A&M and opted for Ole Miss as well next year.

Arkansas has become a lot more greek as a result of the Texas kids. We have a higher sorority participation rate than Ole Miss and we are a larger school. We are also less than 5 hours driving time from most of DFW which is a big selling point. Plus, nature.
