I just left. It was a real good time. We saw the old crow medicine show and hung out on 6th street. But I don't understand the whole "keep Austin weird" thing. I saw lots of weirdos for sure.

Can anyone fill me in on what's up with that?

It's just about trying to maintain the core Austin cultural spirit in the face of enormous growth and influx. Try to let it still have a unique college town vibe despite the fact that it's becoming the Silicon Valley of the South.

Here they pimp the "keep Fayetteville Funky" tag line.

This, and because a homeless man in a leopard thong ran for mayor three times, which Austinites believe makes them special. For the record, I only ever saw him in an evening gown, and never witnessed the leopard thong he was famous for.

It's still a good town, especially for hipsters. There is good food, and lots of live music, but there's really not that much that's unique about it anymore. Even Chuy's is a chain now. Might as well be Applebee's....

It's an eclectic, off-beat, indie, anti mainstream type of culture.

This should be obvious...

It's about not being generic, keeping Walmart out, and doing lots of drugs. Basically a campaign to do their best not to be Dallas. But they've failed. There are so many apartments and skyscrapers now, it's definitely not the Austin of a decade ago.

I would say the Silicon Valley of the south is either Huntsville, AL or The Research Triangle in North Carolina.

It's a lot of fun for 20 somethings but screw that town for anything else.

I also agree they try to be all eff the establishment but embrace bit in a different way.

Well lets start with the burnt orange, stealing of the Western Sizzlin mascot, and that triple decker interstate thing.

They don't have plastic grocery bags, so you are supposed to own them and bring it with you every time. But people obviously forget, and you're kind of shite out of luck, so you end up buying a bunch of them. At least that's what my friends tell me who live in Austin

Great article...the "reporter" simply went to Reddit.com to find some quotes rather than dressing up, driving to some stores, and interviewing real, live people for quotes. Must be bliss to be a journalist these days...

Which I've always thought to be the weirdest part of Austin, it's the capital of the state, home of the flagship university, but somehow see itself as an outlier and not mainstream or whatever.

I've been to Austin more than I care to, have strongly considered moving there to operate a media business from there. Lots of positives for me to relocate there, but there's too damn much burnt orange and pompous asses for me to be truly comfortable.

Austin has felt more dirty than weird to me honestly.

Austin is trying to be Portland. That's why.

I can see that, especially downtown, especially 10 years ago.

Its a great town, IMO, but rapidly losing what made it a great town.

I'd say the transformation is almost complete. The overload of generic apartments are there to stay.
