Their schedule

quote:

Utah State Aggies
Arkansas State Red Wolves
at Oklahoma Sooners
at Georgia Bulldogs
Florida Gators
Chattanooga Mocs (HC)
at Ole Miss Rebels

3-4 in 2008
3-3 in 2009
2-4 in 2010
3-3 in 2011
3-3 in 2012
4-3 in 2013

I think it really comes down to the OM/UT game the week before the Tide come to town. OU, UF, and UGA will all be loses. The rest should be wins. That game in Oxford will be entertaining. Im sure the Vols will fight hard to come out on top and try to start a little momentum for Bama. Do they have what it takes?

I wouldn't mark Utah State down as a "should win" at this point. Arkansas State and Chattanooga are the wins. Oklahoma and Georgia are the losses. Florida maybe a win, but very unlikely. Same with Ole Miss. Utah State could be a win. So I say below because I don't see us getting more than 5 this season anyway.

TBH I know nothing about Utah State this year. It just seems like a game UT should win. Butch has y'all on the right path. It sucks that y'all have had a murderess OOC schedule the past three years. I was debating putting the UGA game instead of the OM game. I think both could be winnable for UT but both could definitely turn ugly. Who do you feel more confident against?

Utah State has made a habit out of almost winning games against "name" opponents and losing by the skin of their teeth. Auburn in 2011, Wisconsin in 2012, and USC last year. They have a phenomenal QB in Chuckie Keeton, and I don't think it's controversial to say that the three teams I mentioned are better than we will be. That doesn't mean we'll lose for sure, but Utah State is hardly a game I'm taking for granted.

I think Butch has us on the right path too, enough to make us a good team again, but I'm also cognizant of the fact that it's going to take time. The program was in an abysmal situation following the combo Kiffin/Dooley fiascos. It can be fixed, but just not overnight.

What's the time table for Butch? When do you want to see noticeable improvements? Divisional championships? SEC titles? Nattys even?

Do you believe he is that guy to bring UT to the promised land? Or will the next one clean up with help from Butches recruiting (which has been remarkable)

I don't expect a natty. That would be fantastic, but so many variables go into that, so it's not really how I want to measure success for Jones. I want to see noticeable improvement by next year, because we'll have some more experience with a really great class from this past year. That may not be enough to take us to a division title, but we may have a shot at contention at least.

Really what I will settle for this year is seeing more fight. There were flashes last year like in the UGA and South Carolina games, but Tennessee still suffered from glass jaw syndrome in some games, especially like those against Oregon and Alabama. No shame in losing to those teams, but I'd like to see the team fight for four full quarters. Not that "fight" is necessarily quantifiable, but it'd be nice to compete more consistently. I honestly think with the way Tennessee played against UGA and South Carolina, they should've been more competitive against Mizzou at least. Auburn was a machine and we were too slow for them, so that wasn't really surprising. Vanderbilt was a major disappointment because we had numerous opportunities to put them away but never capitalized.

I think we ought to be serious contenders for the East and the SEC title by 2016/2017 to sow some confidence that we're getting where we need to be. But I think the fact that Butch Jones is so well-liked, in spite of another lackluster season in 2013, is indicative of an important culture shift that signals good things for Tennessee. And not just in terms of recruits -- things are simply more positive all around in the program than they were when Dooley was in charge (and I liked Dooley, but it's clear in retrospect how in over his head he was).

To answer your question I'm not sure that Butch will take us to the promised land. I do feel he will be a massive improvement over what we've experienced since 2008, and I think he has the tools to make UT a force again. Regardless, his recruiting and building depth will leave us in much better shape whether he's "the guy" or not. I hope he is, because his optimism and attitude are just infectious. I love the guy.

I want them to go 5-7... Kill some of that recruiting momentum and let our coaches get in some of their recruits' ears about how Butch can't get it done.

Below. Will beat the Mocs in a nail biter. Utah State and Arkansas State are tossup games. The rest are losses.

But they have gone 5-7 the past two years and still recruited lights out. I think UT is a program on the definite upswing. I look forward to some hard fought TSIO in the future. It would be bad fricking arse if both teams could go back to wearing home unis during the game. Old school SEC epicness

That is a very apt depiction of USU. They have a stout defense, although Tennessee's OLine will be the matchup advantage that could prove to be too much for them. Keeton is still a question mark as well with his first game back from injury, but if he is 100%, he could give you issues. Kind of like a poor man's Mariota.

He seems like a very likeable coach who high school kids would love to play for. I picture him as the guy who comes in and helps set the bedrock for real change. The next guy at UT will have them back to perineal power status and it will make the SEC much better for it.

Yeah, and again, I think this speaks to the attitude shift that is there from top to bottom since Butch Jones took over. Tennessee has more of a team mentality in all areas of athletics than it has in a long, long time, and I think Jones deserves some of the credit for that. He's been an incredible ambassador for the university, and not just the football program.
