I've seen multiple times that y'all are going to be thin at CB this year, and just saw on twitter -> USC trouble enrolling commits
How many of your commit's do most sc fans expect to get in? Also specifically at CB?
edit for: sc 2014 class on 247

It's sort of unbelievable that they were willing to take so many risks at positions of immediate need

If S.C. is thin at corner then they will have a tough time against aTm holding Sumlins offense down. I expect to see a bit more of his Houston style of passing game this year.

Wow, 8 of 21 either not qualified or still waiting for qualification?
Man, I was feeling bad that one of UK's '14 class (S Mike Edwards) isn't enrolling until January. This make me feel not-so-bad.

The only place we're thin at is Kicker, but we've been feeding him cheeseburgers and BBQ for the past 6 months and I believe Elliott Fry has gained 7-9 lbs.

I was thinking just the opposite. I'm expecting a heavier does of run & pass catching from our backs.

Can you help me understand what your 2 deep is @ corner & DL?

We knew Sawyer wasn't getting in back in Feb, so he went Juco that Spring Semester and is trying to get here for Summer I next year.
Ritchie was a project we didn't know if he was going to play TE or DE, but it wouldn't have been this year.
J Thomas f*'d things up. He was on track to enroll in Summer I and then bombed the spring semester. Now he's not coming.
Joe Blue is just waiting on the NCAA Clearinghouse, the same with the 2 CB's (Lammons and Green)
Wideman is waiting on his test score, if it's good enough, he can start fall camp. His grades improved his Sr year, so he's a candidate for a year of Prep school (not JUCO) if he doesn't make it in this class.
I don't know anything about Smalls situation.

CB
14 Ali Groves | 5-10, 189, RS FR
27 Jamari Smith | 5-10, 199, SO
CB
1 Rico McWilliams | 5-11, 184, RS SO
30 Sidney Rhodes | 5-10, 175, SR
Then from this class we have:
DJ Smtih who is enrolled.
Al Harris Jr who is enrolled.
and for CB we are waiting for these two guys to pass through the NCAA Clearinghouse.
Chris Lammons
Wesley Green
At DL
DE
44 Gerald Dixon | 6-2, 267, RS SO
34 Mason Harris | 6-3, 231, RS JR
5 Darius English | 6-6, 235, RS SO
18 Cedrick Cooper | 6-2, 226, RS JR
DT
97 J.T. Surratt | 6-2, 305, RS SR
92 Gerald Dixon Jr. | 6-3, 325, RS JR
52 Phillip Dukes | 6-3, 322, RS JR
94 Kelsey Griffin | 6-2, 307, SO
We have a bunch of DT's and a lot of guys who have the size/speed needed to play a DE in a 3-4 (which we'll do some of the time when not in our typical 4-2-5.) The NT in the 3-4 is still up for grabs, We don't have a monster 6-5 330lb NT right now that I'm aware of. I did notice that this Depth Chart listed DE English at 235 lbs, but he's over 250 lbs right now.

And a lotta insiders are saying that Green is a no go & Lammons is doubtful... Guess we'll have to wait & see.
When is the latest they could enroll & be elegible to play in '14?

Especially in a year with such huge expectations, it seems like more of a risk.

IDK, but I would assume by the end of the Add/Drop date, and that's usually in the first week or so of classes.

Did you know that "a lot of insiders" were saying that Clowney wouldn't have the grades to get in? How did that work out for them?
USC is thin in proven experience on the edges for 2014 (edge-rushing DEs and CBs), but have players. Not a lot of players in the CBs case, but we got them. We'll be particularly strong and deep in the interior of the defense (DTs, LBs & Spurs, Safeties), so there's some work to go through in the fall getting everyone on the same page but we'll be fine....

I read these 2 deep guys bios... tell me why you think your not thin at CB?
quote:
CB 14 Ali Groves | 5-10, 189, RS FR
redshirt freshman cornerback who look to contribute this fall following the losses of 2013 starters Victor Hampton and Jimmy Legree... was limited in the spring while continuing to recover from right shoulder surgery... listed with the second-team unit entering the fall.
2013: Redshirted in his true freshman season... injured his right shoulder late in the season and underwent surgery.
27 Jamari Smith | 5-10, 199, SO
2013: True freshman who moved from running back to cornerback a week into fall camp... returned to running back during the week prior to the Tennessee game... played in nine games... used primarily on special teams... logged four carries for five yards in the win over Mississippi State...
CB
1 Rico McWilliams | 5-11, 184, RS SO

And your recruiting coordinator/ HC in waiting said...

the Gamecocks are resigned to the fact that "not all the remaining players will qualify", recruiting coordinator Steve Spurrier Jr. told The State on Wednesday.

Don't know what to tell ya, dude...that statement doesn't exactly confirm the claims of "a lotta insiders"...
And I don't know what the argument here is. Gamecock fans knew the CB position was going to be thin even before projected starter Ahmad Christian transferred out. We were all hoping that Victor Hampton would choose to come back for his senior yr., but that didn't happen (it almost cost him dearly too)...
We'll most likely utilize safety Brison Williams at CB early in the year until the younger CBs learn their roles. McWilliams was wowing the coaches and fellow players in preseason before 2012 before suffering his ACL, but has improved quickly and looks to be at 100% now. Rhodes is not a preferred option to be a starter as a walk-on, but is a senior and has shown he can contribute in a reserve role.
Groves and Jamari Smith were high 3* ATHs at prep that both showed talent as CBs in addition to playing WR and RB, and they'll perform fine. We'll have to hope that talented incoming freshmen DJ Smith and Harris can learn on the fly and at least provide supporting roles. If either can pick it up quickly we can possibly move Williams back to his safety spot and move forward.
But regardless we'll have a 3-deep at CB. No one thought much of Munnerlyn and converted WR Carlos Thomas back in the day, and they turned into a #1 SEC passing defense, so we'll see....

No matter who came in this year, we were going to be thin at CB. Hampton went Pro a year early, now he's with the Bengals and our other CB, Legree, graduated and now he's with Cardinals. So we lost 2 starters.
Then our upperclassman CB, Ronnie Martin, was having a baby and decided to go off an be a family man (good for him.)
Then Ahmad Christian who was a projected starter decided he wanted to go focus on baseball, but couldn't make SC's squad, so he bounced.
With the CB's we have:
Rico was pushing for playing time 2 years ago until he hurt his knee in fall camp, he's had 2 years to recoup it. He's got talent, but we won't know anything until he plays.
Ali Groves has been preparing to play CB here for 2 years. That's enough time to learn what Ward and Grady want him to do. he's also a former HS QB, so his field awareness is solid.
Jamari Smith was an 8A All Coast RB in FL, but he also played CB. We moved him this past spring for him to learn the plays.
Sydney Rhodes is a good Spec Teams player, we used him a lot last year as the gunner, so we'll see what he does.
We signed 4 GREAT CB's this class (Smalls is a Safety IMO)
Harris Jr is KC DB Coach Al Harris' son and received NFL training/coaching for the past 6 months with his dad in KC.
He's on campus and has been since Summer I.
DJ Smith is a solid looking CB, who may one day be a Safety, but we're looking at him for CB now. He's already on campus as well.
Also, we have 4 guys who have started at the S position and if we need to, we can move Brison to CB, which we've done for some of the practices. TJ Gurley who was a FR ALL SEC S can slide in for Brison's spot and Chaz Elder is great at the other.
We don't have anymore ?'s than anybody really. We have talent at CB, it's young, but we have options and consistency going for us. We've produced more NFL DB's than almost everybody, we just reload.
