Fort Smith has announced that members of its city board of directors plan to attend a meeting Wednesday to discuss the possibility of attracting a professional sports team to the city.

According to City Director Philip Merry, six high school seniors will present their dream of bringing a professional hockey team at noon Wednesday at the Golden Corral restaurant in Fort Smith.

The Union Christian Academy students — Tristan Hubbard, McKale Scallions, Braxton Smith, Brock Smith, Nico Treshnel and Mary-Catherine Qualls — spent six months researching taxation and support for what would be a resident-owned team.

"They looked at what is the single thing that would keep and attract young professionals," Merry said.

After speaking with representatives of Major League Baseball, the National Football League and the National Hockey League, the students concluded that hockey was the most viable option.

The team, tentatively named the Arkansas Marshals, would need taxpayer support. With a population of about 87,000, Merry admits that Fort Smith is smaller in comparison to other host cities of professional teams. He said the six students looked to Wisconsin's Green Bay Packers as a model team in a small-population area to determine the viability of bringing such a team to Fort Smith.

At the lunch event, the students plan to present their six-month research findings and announce new steps with the city to conduct a one-year study regarding the project's potential.

Because there's nothing more popular in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma than hockey.

Yeah the Riverblades didn't work out so well.

The part about them finding out the NFL wasn't a "viable option" was funny. Like really?

Tell me that this is a special ed project.

Please tell me that, because it sure sounds from the article that their intention is an actual professional team and not an independent minor league team.

Ft. Fresh should start with putting together a decent rec league softball team and see where that takes them.

But of course, the general public should fit the bill for this luxury of having a major league professional team in a city of less than 100,000.

This has to be a special ed project that the city council members are just entertaining these twats since it's summer and softball season is over.

I thought this was serious until I saw this

and then this

I'm sure it'll be laden with facts, math, research, funding proposals, logistics plans and sustainability formulas.

I did laugh at the Golden Corral as well but didn't want to admit it. Ate there last week for first time in 10 years.

It was legit.

Why can't Van Buren get the NHL team? BS if you ask me

Instead of wasting time, money, and effort of entertaining a city funded sports team, Ft. Smith (and Van Buren) need to be having meetings to bring in industries to put jobs back in the vacant Whirlpool, soon to be Rheem, and various other abandoned industrial complexes in those cities.

I remember looking forward to recess and it was a treat to get to play dodge ball--especially in the gym.

It is what it is in Fort Smith. The thing that always sticks in my mind when I pass through there is Zero Street--maybe the only one in the country.
