Pickup trucks customized to spew black smoke into the air are quickly becoming the newest weapon in the culture wars.
"Coal Rollers" are diesel trucks modified with chimneys and equipment that can force extra fuel into the engine causing dark black smoke to pour out of the chimney stacks. These modifications are not new, but as Slate's Dave Weigel pointed out on Thursday, "rolling coal" has begun to take on a political dimension with pickup drivers increasingly viewing their smokestacks as a form of protest against environmentalists and Obama administration emissions regulations.

Last month, Vocativ noted many coal rollers focus their fumes on "nature nuffies," or people who drive hybrids, and "rice burners," or Japanese-made cars.

My uncle claims this is the sign of an engine that is breathing right. He spent like 8 grand deleting his 08 cummins(5.9?) and throwing a chip and new exhaust on it. Thing is a monster. In power mode he as 620 hp at the clutch and 450 torques. At least thats what the shop that it did told him. He can "roll coal" so thick you could hide a car behind him.

He doesnt have a chimney.

If you do this you are just as bad as a pedo in my book, and likely a racist.

Depends, it can been a cool look but I'd rather have mine tuned correctly than blowing all that un-burnt fuel into the air.

I needed pictures to understand this concept since I've never seen it.

...and yep...just another example of "look-at-me" behavior. People that do this in their daily lives, outside of car-shows and the like, are dickheads. It's not some edgy political statement it's simple frickery.

Come on. Buying a huge truck and then intentionally modifying it to guzzle more fuel for no other reason than to make it spew out smoke is like the most "Murica thing ever.

Wow. I can't believe that's street legal anywhere. It definitely shouldn't be. Back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth my unit had a convoy pulled over for excessive smoke from our POS trucks. That was 1982'ish. Nothing like that, though.

I see this all the time out here. It's usually young military guys with lots of disposable income.

They almost always have Texas plates. Now that I know this is a thing, it makes sense. I've seen lots of Prius drivers get "rolled".

Completely selfish douche baggery. Cops should stop the motherfricker on the spot and have the vehicle towed.

That shite is a safety hazard.

Who is your uncle trying to impress? Anybody who sees that is gonna think he is a dumb arse. Then see the bama sticker and go...uh..ok I get it.
