I think Tennessee returns a lot too but lost some skill spots and a couple on the line.

That is accurate for LSU.

We lose 6 on offense:
QB Mettenberger
RB Hill
FB Copeland
WR Landry
WR Beckham Jr.
OG Turner

We lose 4 on defense:
DT Johnson
DT Ferguson
LB Barrow
S Loston

AU loses 3 on Offense and 5 on Defense (three consistent starters). They return 34 of the 44 two deep positions.

This is a more important indicator of potential success.

Do you have some proof for this or are you just throwing it out there because it helps AU position?

Well what sounds wrong about it to you? In many cases, positions on a team could consist of someone who is on the field at opening kick-off (starter), but also someone that platoons with him who gets almost as many snaps in games as he does every game. So if the "starter" leaves the team, but the reserve who platooned with him returns, how significant will the loss be?

We also had a thread about this a month or so back, but SDS referenced Phil Steele's article about the returning lettermen on SEC teams for 2014:

Everything I've read usually uses returning starters. I'm not saying he's wrong but I want some proof that the percentage of the 2 deep is more important than the percentage of starters.

UGA loses 5 on offense and 1 + 2 on defense (JHC and Wiggins). That is also all we lose in the two deep, we return 36 of 44 there.

Someone is going to say something about Matthews, but he didn't play enough. Connor Norman played more snaps than Tray did last year.

returning starters are a very important number,

BUT

most championships are won by players 23 to 50

NOT

1 to 22.

Teams these days need quality depth to sustain play at a high quality championship level.
