For all those who have complained about the small ball in the NCAA, the Home Run Derby in Omaha's TD Ameritrade Park last night was an amazing show. The competition used major league ball which is supposed to be used in the NCAA next season. I was under the impression they were using non-regulation bats but info below says otherwise. Nonetheless, they put on a show and hit almost twice as many HRs as last year.

What transpired last night wound up in the CSB category. It came down to two kids from the same hometown and hence the same HS in Mission, TX. One played for Tex Tech and the other for Tex.

Eric Gutierrez (TT) put on a monster show of 34 homers in the first two rounds to make it to the finals. Tres Barrera (Tex) was in second with 16 going into the final round. Gutierrez set the record for one round in the second round with 20 HRs. Unfortunately his record only stood for one round when Barrera hit 25 HRs in the finals to win it. Also unfortunately for Gutierrez the totals were zeroed out for the final round and he could only muster 16. He did however hit 11 before he got his second out but he must have run out of gas. Gutierrez hit 50 total and Barrera hit 41.

Hopefully, the NCAA will bring back some offensive punch for the hitters.

A couple of other notes:

Matt Dacy of Richmond Spiders hit a towering shot 508'

Along with the CWS, Creighton plays their games at TD Ameritrade and no college player has ever hit a home run over the fence to dead center in a game. Barrera hit three out to dead center in the final round. Nobody else in the competition did so.

Also BTW... Barrera is a Freshman and Gutierrez is a Soph.

Sikes Orvis was the lone rep for the SEC. He hit four in the first round. Don't laugh, five HR's made the second round.

Why did the NCAA let them use the old bats and better balls? Weren't they afraid someone might get hurt? They should have to use the same bats and balls as the regular season. That would have made for some entertainment I'm sure.

The hitters got to use BB core bats and the new major league ball.

The ball is the one they will use next year. The bats as I understood it were not the current bats.

You could have downvoted since the SEC's only rep was from Ole Miss and you would rather not mention it...

I defer to others who may have more info or knowledge. I was flipping channels early so I could have misunderstood.

They were using non-regulation bats.

The BB core bats are what they use now. They weren't using them in the derby

I believe they let them use the old bats the last couple of seasons (55 and 62 or so HRs in the derby those years) and doubled those totals this year with the lower seamed balls.

Even though they were using old bats, the significant increase last night using the lower seamed balls is promising for 2015 and beyond.

BBCOR is like swinging a solidified turd compared to the old BESR bats. Hopefully the NCAA will do things other than the ball. The differences in the ball will help, but ultimately these bats still won't hit homeruns, there just might be more runs.
